NEW NAME: Too Poor to Count
āToo Red to Countā ā 2025 (Hurricane Helene remembrance quilt)
The Appalachian region was left battered and largely ignored in the wake of Hurricane Heleneās devastation in 2024. When I first saw the fabric for the
@windhamfabrics @themqg challenge, and read a little more about
@entropyalwayswins , I knew I was finally going to make my remembrance quilt. The tri-state area between East Tennessee, southwest virginia, and western North Carolina are my home, forever and always.
Did you know we could fix 100% of the damage caused by HH in NC 5 times over from the taxpayer money sent to Israel? Despite the scale of destruction, federal aid stalled and has continued to stall. I canāt help but wonder if this choice had anything to do with most Appalachian voters being red ā an area that couldnāt be āwon overā in elections. This is a perception and an opinion, wholly mine, whether it may or may not be true.
So while the rest of the country looked away⦠Appalachians fought. They resisted. Appalachian people did what they always had to do. Like they always do.
āIn 2024, Appalachian communities devastated by Hurricane Helene were abandoned in plain sight. Aid stalled for Appalachia while billions flowed to Israelādemocrats funded war, not red votersā recovery. I pieced traditional state blocks to embody the enduring Appalachian spirit, rooted in tradition and self-reliance. This quilt honors my Appalachian brothers who were left to weather the aftermath alone. This is a testament to how forgotten Appalachian rebuilds when the country and its leaders look away.ā

(PS: the thing about being a democrat from a red placeā¦itās easy to see all the wrong decisions made, from both sides of the isle. Rather than pointing blame (aside from making an observation), Appalachians picked themselves up. They persevered, as always.)
