For the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, James Cohan Gallery is proud to celebrate the participation of Yinka Shonibare's Guest Artists Space (G.A.S) Foundation, as one of the four gallery artists presenting. Guest Artists Space (G.A.S.) Foundation presents Chorus, a multi-media installation emerging from its residency programme, which operates across a purpose-built creative campus in Lagos and a sustainability-focused farm with an onsite artist studio in Ikise. The installation centers the Yorùbá courtyard – historically a space of gathering, ritual, and intergenerational exchange – as its architectural and conceptual point of departure, bringing together the voices of former residents and collaborators. Central to the installation is is a film presented as channels of sound, washes of colour, and the movement of images. Chorus unfolds as a contemplative, multi-sensory environment in which visitors journey through the intersecting dialogues of former G.A.S. residents and beckons all to enter, listen, and consider their own possibilities for taking part. 🔗 Learn more about G.A.S' installation at the link in bio. 📸: GUEST ARTISTS SPACE (G.A.S.) YINKA SHONIBARE • Mennour is thrilled to announce the representation of British artist Yinka Shonibare (1962-). Born in London to Nigerian parents, he moved to Lagos at the age of three. Returning to England to study Fine Art at Byam Shaw School of Art, London and received his MFA from @goldsmithscca .   His interdisciplinary practice employs physical materials such as Dutch wax textiles and bronze as vehicles for exploring complex historical, political, and cultural ideas. In doing so, the work uses material history as a lens for broader reflection, inviting a rethinking of how we perceive culture and encourage new ways of understanding the world around us.   In 2002, Shonibare was commissioned by Okwui Enwezor to create an installation for Documenta XI. In 2004, he was nominated for the Turner Prize, and in 2008 his mid-career survey began at the @mca_australia , Sydney travelling to the @brooklynmuseum , New York and the @smithsonian_africanart , Washington D.C. in 2009. In 2010, his first public art commission was displayed on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, London, and now resides in the permanent collection of the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. Elected a Royal Academician in 2013 and awarded a CBE in 2019, that same year his installation The British Library was acquired by @tate , London. In 2021, Shonibare received the @whitechapelgallery Art Icon Award and later that year, he opened a major retrospective at the @museumdermodernesalzburg . In 2022, Shonibare launched @gasfoundation , a non-profit founded and developed by the artist. The Foundation is dedicated to facilitating cultural exchange through residencies, public programmes and exhibition opportunities for creative practitioners from around the world. The live/work residency spaces are set across sites in Lagos and a rural working farm in Ijebu, Ogun State. Shonibare’s works are in notable museum collections internationally, including @tate , @vamuseum , @smithsonian_africanart , @themuseumofmodernart , @modernamuseet , @mcachicago , @lagallerianazionale and @vandenbroek_foundation . His first solo exhibition at Mennour is planned for October 2026 at 5 rue du Pont de Lodi, Paris.

‘Refugee Astronaut in Snow Globe’ (2020) is a thought-provoking sculptural edition by British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare. The original idea for this work stemmed from the concept of space as a possible place of refuge for the human race. An omen from an environmentally catastrophic future, Shonibare’s work is a warning of what could happen if we do not act on climate change. The artist explains, “It’s trying to imagine what could happen if we don’t do something about rising water levels and the displacement of people.” The figure is clad in moon boots, a spherical helmet and a spacesuit. The surrounding air in the snow globe seems to be too poisonous to inhale as the astronaut clutches a pair of breathing tubes on their back. This work challenges colonial connotations. As Shonibare remarks, “The refugee astronaut is the reverse of the colonial instinct of the astronaut – someone who is going out to conquer the world. What you have here is a nomadic astronaut just trying to find somewhere that’s still habitable.” The figure's spacesuit and boots are fashioned from Dutch wax batik fabric. A hallmark of Shonibare’s practice, the brightly coloured patterned fabric is a symbol of African identity. The astronaut is a recurring feature in Shonibare’s practice. A life size ‘Refugee Astronaut’ is on show at ‘Safiotra [Hybridities/Hybridités]’ @fondationh_ in Madagascar, while another belongs to @wellcomecollection in London. ‘Refugee Astronaut in Snow Globe’ is available to purchase. Food Man by @YinkaShonibareStudio As part of #TheGalleryS5, curated by @bakul_patki_arts_culture
”It’s deliberately, surreal and colourful so that the immediate thought is not necessarily about the serious political issues behind the work.” - Yinka

Public artist Yinka Shonibare reflects on the ecological consequences of colonisation and industrialisation across the African continent with Food Man, a poignant and powerful piece wrestling with the delicate balance of food sustainability.

Food Man stands as both celebration and critique, inviting dialogue about who controls food production, who bears the environmental costs, and how we might reimagine a more equitable future.

🔗 The Gallery Season 5 exhibition, It’s Not Easy Being Green, runs until 3 November. Find out more about this bold public art project via link in bio

Ela funciona tanto como celebração quanto como crítica, convidando ao diálogo sobre quem controla a produção de alimentos, quem arca com os custos ambientais e como podemos reinventar um futuro mais justo e equitativo.

A new Wind Sculpture by Yinka Shonibare was unveiled last weekend during the grand opening of the Almaty Museum of Arts in Kazakhstan. Shonibare’s Wind Sculptures expand the artist’s interest, begun in 2013, in freezing a moment in time and sculpting the impossible–giving form to the wind. The sculptures transform materials typically used for Eurocentric public monuments into a weightless, billowing piece of cloth. Their sail-like abstract forms monumentalize the wind as a metaphor for the movement of people across the Globe, and by extension, histories of slavery, migration, colonialism, and empire. The Almaty Museum of Arts, founded by collector and philanthropist Nurlan Smagulov, features over 700 important works of modern Kazakh art alongside deep holdings of artwork from Central Asia, and masterpieces by international artists. The museum, which is the first private museum in Central Asia dedicated to modern and contemporary art, aims to become a major platform for contemporary art in the region. 📸: YINKA SHONIBARE, Wind Sculpture (TG) II, 2024, hand painted aluminum, unique from a series of 9, 315 3/8 x 129 3/4 x 89 1/8 in, 801.1 x 329.7 x 226.3 cm. Portfolios from several recent bodies of graphic work are on view @cristearoberts , booth 307, this weekend @thearmoryshow in New York. These cloth-bound portfolio boxes - each one entirely unique - feature Dutch wax batik patterns collaged by Yinka Shonibare onto each print. @yinkashonibarestudio ’s signature use of Dutch wax print symbolises the complex, entangled histories of Africa and Europe. Originally inspired by Indonesian batik, the fabric was mass-produced by the Dutch, then sold to British colonies in West Africa, where it later became known as ‘African print.’ 📍The Armory Show, New York 📸 @cristearoberts
