‘Study of Marigolds (Uganda)’ will be on view @kettlesyard , Cambridge as part of the group exhibition ‘Handpicked: Painting Flowers from 1900 to Today’ 🌷 Featuring flower paintings from the past 125 years, the exhibition focuses on artists’ enduring interest in one of art history’s most cherished genres, revealing ways in which paintings of flowers can suggest personal and symbolic meaning and reflect sociohistorical changes, as well as being both stylistically innovative and compelling. I’m thrilled to announce my artwork ‘What’s Left’ (2024) has entered the TATE collection. It was a dream for me to take my mum back home to St. Vincent and the Grenadines last year, to document her return after more than 50 years since leaving the island for a better life here in the UK. I’m honestly here because of her love and support. To have this specific piece in the Tate collection means the world to me, our story will live longer than us and that’s so beautiful! ♡ Something else I’d like to share, whilst in Hull @87__gallery in November I reconnected with my tutor from @croydoncollege where I did my art foundation course 10 years ago. I was so lucky to meet his current students who reminded me so much of my cohort at Croydon. One thing he said really stuck with me and words I thought I should share, for those of us from low socioeconomical backgrounds it’s the people who encourage you and believe in you that give you a fighting chance in the art world, we have no other means of help and support. So a special shoutout to @joel_ryan_mcdermott the first person to believe in my ideas and who pushed me to begin my artistic journey at @goldsmithsart it was so lovely to see you after such a long time and at such a significant milestone, my most cherished moment this year I just had to mention it! I am on the hunt for this mystery man! Whilst visiting Hull in May, I was walking along the Humber in Hessle with @bisforbecky @lucyintheskywithpies and @misszomar . I initially walked past him because I was afraid to disturb his privacy but with much encouragement from the team I went back to ask him if I could take a photograph, he was so kind and sat there as still as he was before I had approached him. I was drawn to how serene he was, sitting gazing at the water and horizon. It was quite a chaotic time, constantly on my phone and camera during that period and he made me feel at peace. He also reminded me of my uncles great aunt I depicted in a painting last year from our trip to St.Vincent and the Grenadines, she had the almost exact same zimmer frame (seen on the last slide), my mum remembered her as a beautiful, kind, tall woman in her younger years and it makes me think about what life he lived or what he might have been like. I’d really love to locate him and tell him he was so kind to allow me to take an image of him, show him this painting and just chat. Thank you @bbchumberside @bbcnews @bbclooknorth for helping me locate him! I really regret not asking his name and I’d love it if you could share this, even if you’re not based in hull. ‘For The Last Time’ has entered @hepworthwakefield ’s collection and to celebrate they have released a limited addition print now available (last slide) 👏🏾✨ Sharing some images of in progress shots from the studio in December/January, it was so rammed in preparation for my solo show for @tiwanicontemporary this past March. This piece is my depiction of my fiancé @oba_who ‘s late grandmas house which I was so honoured to depict after our stay at his family’s farm in Uganda. Happy to have ‘Liquid Sunshine’ in the group exhibition ‘Panorama’ with @perrotin This is a depiction of the quick shifting nature of weather in the Caribbean, my mum said there is a saying for this ‘the devil and the wife a’fight’, or ‘Liquid Sunshine’. The Nearness of Elsewhere is Now Open ✨ A commission we have been producing this year and planning since 2023! @87__gallery @artlinkhull It’s been such a wonderful experience being around the community in Hull, quieter than busy London but definitely as powerful. Thank you all for allowing me into your space, trusting and connecting with me. This project allowed me to slow down and carefully consider elements of painting I truly enjoy. It made way for me to dive into my summer reading list, surrounded by magic and unique storytelling. It’s also been so wonderful to work alongside such an amazing team who carefully consider, listen to and nurture everyone that they connect with. I had so much fun making screen print additions (my first time) thanks to @fsr_fsr_fsr but more info on that soon, for now they will be available to find online and at their physical store, all funds supporting the gallery and charity! My heart is full, thank you ❤︎ @bisforbecky @lindseyalvissimpson @lucyintheskywithpies … This exhibition is inspired by research visits to Hull, where Emma has led workshops and attended community gatherings to incorporate the stories of local people and places. Flowers from local greenspaces are merged with blooms from Prempeh’s native South London. Interiors featuring bay windows, such as those commonly seen in terrace houses around Hull, collide with views of the Humber Bridge as seen from the Humber Bridge Country Park, a marker of returning home for many who live here. This summer, Prempeh invited people in Hull to contribute creatively to the canvases, encouraging reflection on interiors and natural environments that hold personal significance. Visitors collaborated with her to add their stories in text, image and mark-making. These expressions can be seen amongst Prempeh’s fluid brushstrokes, and explored more in depth in Our Community Gallery. The Nearness of Elsewhere is curated in collaboration with @tiwanicontemporary and runs at 87 Gallery, Artlink Hull, from 4 October – 19 December 2024. Opening times: Thursday-Saturday, 10am-4:30pm. Ever So Present II: Between Home and Elsewhere is now open @gagosian Park and 75, New York until August 8th! From the formation of an idea to the development of my practice and to then see it travel and blossom into spaces such as this has been such a rewarding and surreal experience 🙇🏾‍♀️ A special thank you to @iambayn his heart is in everything he pursues, and I’m always grateful to be part of the journey, its beautiful that you have stepped into a new stage with the birth of this show, Happy Birthday week! 🫶🏾 Another big thank you to @tashaturk6 and the team @gagosian who gave me and the wonderful @lukechidiagada such a warm welcome. Proud to have ‘To Be Seen or To Be Invisible’ (2024) on display @royalacademyarts in their summer exhibition ✨ I’m so happy to see this painting I made last year as part of @bwoartgallery ‘where dreams are born and peace restored’ amongst so much talent. ‘Belonging In-Between’ closes next week! Still can’t believe we are in May 😳 Sharing some photos from a film camera I took with me to Lagos in March. I’m a bit rough lol but it’s such a beautiful way to capture and anticipate wonderful memories.
