the zebra goes wild where the sidewalk ends, 2023 This solo, multidisciplinary work, presented at the Center for Performance Research (@cprnyc ), gathers research into the life and times of Henry Dumas. I was deeply moved by his narrative language and his contributions to the Black Arts Movement…I movement I return to that continues to echo with urgency and resilience. Though his life was taken too soon through police brutality, his writing endures. His text Ark of Bones became a kind of portal for me; an entry point into a space where imagination and spirit converge. This piece emerged as a healing field. A place to sit with grief, to listen, to move, and to honor. Photos by Elyse Mertz (@e.mertz.photography )

Where do I begin… I am beyond elated and deeply humbled to be recognized as part of this year’s class of Guggenheim Fellows. This moment feels both surreal and grounding; a reminder that the visions we carry, no matter how distant they may seem, can be realized with time, care, and unwavering persistence. To those who have been by my side since the very beginning…I cannot thank you enough. Your support has meant everything, especially through moments that are not easy…you’ve instilled in me possibilities of divine hope. My family, friends, colleagues, the elders, the mentors, the ancestors…this recognition is as much yours as it is mine. It stands as a testament to continuing forward. I feel a profound shift taking place, one that is aligning me more closely with purpose, direction, and trust in my own voice as a leader. Along the way, I am learning the importance of self respect and honoring my capacity as an artist. My devotion to creativity is a passageway to transformation, even in the wake of adversity. Perhaps the most remarkable part of this journey is realizing that I am not alone and that in my truth I will remain on a path towards being a compassionate vessel of change who can uplift others on the way up. With deep sincerity, gratitude, and love Thank you 🖤 @guggfellows #guggfellows2026

I’m deeply grateful to be part of Soft Landing at @63audubon , an exhibition that considers fabric as a site of memory, care, and lived experience. The works on view explore how materials hold intimacy and history, inviting a slower, more attentive way of seeing and feeling. I’m honored to share my work “The body rehearses tomorrow”, a lithographic print on fabric that unfolds through layers and accumulation. The work builds a subtle density through transparency, allowing gestures and traces to gather into a shifting visual field. Beautifully curated by Moshopefeoluwa Olugunju (@yournameissolong ) and supported by the @yaleschoolofart and @yalesom , the exhibition is on view through May 6th. In addition to the work, I had the pleasure of activating the space with a conceptual performance titled “Deviations”. It was incredible to be in dialogue with viewers of all ages and to experience the space as something living and responsive. Special thanks to @nicoelganso for helping to produce the performance activation.

A Horizon Turns Within, 2025 Presented @thehudsoneye.1 This work limns the ongoing effort of becoming; the way a body returns to itself through motion and insistence. I have been thinking about breath and the cycles of trying again; how the myth of Icarus persists as a figure of recognition…not for his fall but for the way the legend offers a way to consider being in motion toward what we do not yet know. Performed with sound artist @coleblu__ . More soon. Works: The Figure, lithograph with chine collé, 9” x 11”, AP Aurea Terra, lithograph with chine collé, 12” x 15”, AP Performance duration 00.40.00

Intermezzo, a solo dance performance shown at @motionstatearts in February 2026. It moves within the subtle interior of an intermezzo, where time loosens its structure and slips into another register. The moment feels sustained, slightly apart from yet embedded in the steady collision of events. A piano composition of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor offers the grace of sound as shifting hues pass over the body; soft and unnamed, altering the sense of what is near and what is distant. Within this interval, contours of change appear without insisting, arriving almost imperceptibly yet fully present. Photo credit: domenik carl lee

Screened at the Museum of Modern Art on November 19, 2024, the onliness is a 16 mm film processed by Mono No Aware. Through broken objects, redacted imagery, and collaborative performance, the film reflects moments of rupture, withheld access, and the not so quiet shifts shaping life in the United States.

‘Syntax of Undoing’ moves through bodies, language, and technology. Inspired by the weather in Shakespeare’s The Tempest, this work listens for what is still forming; inquiring into how resilience blooms in aftermaths. Arrival remains open in the wake of shifting landscapes rendered between realities. Gestures pass through motion capture and virtual spaces where they loosen to take another shape and return. Deep gratitude to @team.rolfes and @sunday.applepie for our long shared commitment to experimental creative expression. Thank you @mediaartx , I’m humbled by your care and support in bringing this project to life. Also, thank you @theatermitu for welcoming us.

Join us Tomorrow!! AnkhLave is excited to unveil “Echoes of Home” featuring 32 artists at the world renowned Tafaria Castle & Center for the Arts (@tafaria.castle ) in Nyeri, Kenya 🇰🇪 “Echoes of Home” is an exhibition that brings together a group of U.S. based Black artists, each presenting two-dimensional artworks that delve into the complexities of ancestral identity. Hosted in Kenya, the birthplace of many African diasporic roots, this exhibition serves as a poignant act of reclamation; a journey back to the origins of cultural heritage, history, and self. The artists featured in this exhibition; ranging from painters to mixed-media creators; embark on a shared exploration of their ancestral narratives. Through their works, they confront the historical displacements and erasures experienced by their forebears, reclaiming and reimagining identities that were once lost or obscured. Each piece is a dialogue between the artists’ present selves and the echoes of their ancestral pasts, rendered through vibrant colors, symbolic imagery, and powerful storytelling. Kenya, with its rich tapestry of cultures and histories, provides a profound backdrop for this exhibition. The country’s landscapes, traditions, and spiritual practices resonate deeply with the themes of the artworks, creating a space where the artists’ explorations of identity are both personal and universal. By presenting their works in Kenya, these artists not only honor their own histories but also engage in a broader conversation about the African diaspora, cultural continuity, and the ongoing journey of self-discovery. “Echoes of Home” is more than an exhibition; it is a reclamation. It is a return to the roots of identity, a celebration of ancestral legacies, and a testament to the enduring power of art to bridge histories, geographies, and identities. This show was Curated by Dario Mohr (@dariomohr_art ) Founder and Director of AnkhLave Arts Alliance, Inc. (@ankhlave ) a nonprofit organization presenting artists who seek to continue the legacy of their indigenous heritage through their contemporary art.
