Half Man is now on BBC iPlayer and HBO Max in the United States! #HalfMan is new miniseries from Emmy-winning Writer/Actor #RichardGadd (Baby Reindeer) and stars Gadd and BAFTA-winner #JamieBell. The story follows two brothers, Niall and Ruben, who grew up as brothers despite not being related by blood—one strong and fiercely loyal, the other quiet and gentle. Thirty years later, they reunite at Niall’s wedding, but Ruben seems uneasy and on edge; when a sudden act of violence erupts, it sends the story back through their shared past, revealing how their bond was shaped and how even the closest relationships can ultimately fall apart.
Block one of the series was shot by Carlos Catalán BSC AEC (@carloscatalan_ ). For the show Carlos opted to shoot with the Alexa 35 with Zeiss Superspeeds.

"When our characters are in the infinity pool, we used a camera in a splash housing perched on a small inflatable system our key grip Malcolm Huse built, which let my A-camera operator Jon Beacham operate with a huge degree of flexibility, almost like a handheld camera, but he could keep the camera at water level and track around in the water with the actors.
"We’d complement that with our B-camera on a Scorpio 45 telescopic crane which we could then use to track from the dry set to the water’s edge. Keeping the lens right at the water level with the actors helped build their isolation, because not only could they not touch the edges of the pool but now visually you could see they were stuck treading water in the centre."
In one of Primate’s most tense sequences, its characters try to escape a bloodthirsty chimp by diving into an infinity pool – Stephen Murphy BSC ISC explains how the impressive set and sequence came together.

We are delighted to announce the 2026 BSC Mentorship Scheme is now open for applications! As part of our ongiung remit to education the BSC will provide 40 mentoring opportunities for young DOPs and Camera Operators during 2026/27.
Applications are open to anyone living in the United Kingdom and over 21-years old. The scheme is not open to those still in full-time education. To apply visit and hit "education" on the top of the page. The closing date is 18:00 BST on Monday 4th May 2026.
What do you get from the mentorship? The basic commitment is 6 x 1hr contact time with your mentor across a 6 -12 month period. This can be on zoom or a phone call but we encourage the first meeting to be in person if possible. Beyond this commitment your mentor might be able to arrange:
- A set visit (where possible)
Previous mentees have got so much from the experience of being on set - even one day can be hugely beneficial. You would be on set to observe only: you are not a working member of the camera department.
- Joining your mentor for a recce / or part of pre production.
If your mentor is in pre-production you might be able to join them on a recce or sit in on a production meeting.
- Joining your mentor in the grade
Mentors will need permission from their Producer to bring you in to the grade: this cannot always be obtained and might require you to sign an NDA.

LENS CHOICES - “Invasion” season 2. Apple TV+
Here’s a nice wee selection of stills from the above show that I shot a few years ago in the UK & South Africa, and I must give a special shout out to the amazing production designer @simonrogers_productiondesigner who built the most incredible sets. The stills highlight the creative decisions behind lens choices for storylines, and showcase a beautiful array of Panavision classic lenses. I’m not sure I’ll ever work on a show again with so many lenses. 👻 Our director Brad Andersen had me running around like a lunatic, but I loved his bold visual choices & bonhomie.
Pics 1+2. Ultra & APO Panatars were used for this section of story charting the characters’ journey through mid west USA & these anamorphics were so beautiful. Totally individual flares & a slightly low con look - which I love - and we had the 35mm which is truly unique & the case has to be opened to a fanfare or trumpets & flying angels.
Pics 3+4. The absolute classic G series anamorphics felt right for the slightly more sci-fi section of story which included dream sequences and space ship interiors with a lotta vfx. More predictable across the range but still individual characteristics.
Pics 5+6. This section of story charted the kids journey from London to Paris and needed to be grittier and rooted in realism. We used PV vintage sphericals using a 2.39:1 extraction with less flare & less distortion towards edges. I mean, still beautiful. And was able to use some wider focal lengths for the channel tunnel sequences.
Pic 7. Sometimes you need to pragmatic with lens choices & we needed a man anamorphic zoom to match the G series to use on a big technocrane day in a cornfield with huge vistas. The T series 37-85mm was the choice & though a bit more contrasty than the Gs with deeper blacks it got us through the day & nothing the DIT couldn’t tweak for rushes.

It is with sadness that we learn this morning of the passing of the extraordinary wildlife cinematographer Doug Allan (1951-2026).
Doug was born in Scotland in 1951 and graduated Stirling University with a degree in Marine Biology. His involvement in the British Antarctic Survey led to his footage being used by the #BBC and further work for them on groundbreaking shows The Blue Planet, Planet Earth, Life, Frozen Planet and more.
Over the course of his career Allan won eight Emmy Awards, five Baftas and was made an honorary fellow of the Royal Photographic Society throughout his career.
Bafta Scotland awarded him the Outstanding Contribution to Craft prize in 2017 in recognition of his work.
Our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this time.
