Our first project looked like a bar — it asked where food belongs. A question about cities. In 2004, we were invited by @aila_national and @aila_nsw to take part in a ten-day exhibition at @botanicsydney Our response — Salad Bar — drew on the language of a cocktail bar, but offered a place to gather, reflect, and encounter food in public space. Built before vertical gardens were familiar, it asked: How do we integrate food production into the city? What role can landscape architects play in reshaping how people perceive food, nature and public space? And how might play be a tool of public engagement? Thanks @landscapeau for featuring us! Congratulations to Turf Design Studio with Jeppe Aagaard Andersen who have won in the “Built Outcomes” category of the 2025 Australian Urban Design Awards for Central Park Public Domain. Jury Citation (excerpt): “The reimagining of Central Park Public Domain over the past 18 years has transformed the former Carlton and United Brewery site, featuring parks, streets, lanes, and plazas creating 12 new public spaces. Through an innovative approach to place making, this high-density neighbourhood now thrives with street activity, offering spaces of repose in green spaces set within the reused heritage components. With the benefit of time and maturation, and the recent completion of the final stage of works, Central Park is a highly successful and integrated piece of new urban fabric in city, linking the formerly disparate localities of Chippendale with Broadway, University of Technology Sydney and by extension, Central Sydney. With a focus on the quality of public space CHROFI worked with TURF Design Studio to develop an inviting ground plane that weaves together a network of pedestrian through site links, public green space, and intimate and unique moments of rest, retail, or gathering. - High quality housing is surrounded by levels of greenery, with the ground level, 1st floor retail level, podiums and rooftops embedded with native flora. CHROFI is proud to announce the approval of a new planning proposal at Warrawong, NSW. The new Warrawong Plaza will bring 6500m² of new public open space, and 1300 new homes, with 15% designated as affordable housing. Our activation of Cadigal Green at University of Sydney is now complete and ready for students and the glorious spring weather. The space has been quickly filled with students studying, hanging out, having a coffee or lunch. Turf developed a seating plan, with new outdoor powerpoints and water and power for two food van sites. A graphic system by @garbettdesign was developed and applied to custom @basilbangs umbrellas. Customised Jil tables by @madebytait are matched with their Volley chairs in three colours. Happy days! Cadigal Green by @tcl_studio (2010)

We are very excited to hear that the Tweed Mall Masterplan on Bundjalung Country has been approved by Tweed Shire Council and Joint Regional Planning Panel. The project has been a close collaboration with landscape architects @turfdesignstudio for our client Elanor Investors Group. A project that has been three years in the making through State Agencies and Tweed Shire Council Design Review Panel supported by the NSW Government Architect Design Review process. The redevelopment of the large 1970s shopping mall preempts a denser urban future for a rapidly growing region with some incredible natural assets on its doorstep. The project will deliver a diverse and thriving destination and place to live in Tweed with a green public heart at its core.  We look forward to the next steps and will share more in the coming weeks. Over the past four years, our team has been privileged to facilitate a co-design process with the @awmemorial evolving the National War Memorial Public Domain in alignment with the goals and design principles of the heritage plan. The process involved reviewing AWM’s masterplan, integrating the site’s key components — the Southern Entrance, the Bean Building, and Anzac Hall — along with improvements to East and West Streets. This year’s @naidocweek theme “Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud” celebrates the unyielding spirit of First Nations communities and invites everyone to stand in solidarity, amplifying voices that have long been silenced. Recently, we sat down with Uncle Gavi Duncan for a @government.architect.nsw webinar to share the importance of including indigenous voices and weaving stories into designing Country centric places. Gavi spoke about the the process of developing Gosford Leagues Club Park with Turf Design Studio, repairing and reclaiming Country in a way that has helped Gosford ‘unblock its arteries’. Sub Base Platypus Torpedo Factory is the recipient of the 2024 @aila_nsw Landscape Architecture Award for Cultural Heritage for the extensive reworking of the 1942 Torpedo Factory building to create a new multifunctional public space on the former HMAS Platypus site in North Sydney. The project promotes multiple narratives that reflect the complex nature of the site — formally a torpedo factory, submarine base and gas works — and importantly the millennia–long connection of the Cammeraygal people and culture on the harbour and its peninsulas. Cultural engagement and reconciliation through design has been delivered in contemporary and innovative ways that have created a layered response to the intrinsic heritage and cultural values of the site. AILA Jury Citation — Combining restoration of endemic vegetation, contemporary art, and imaginative heritage interpretation, the team has drawn on the qualities of the place. The team’s collaborative approach has transformed a derelict industrial building into a compelling public space that fosters local interest and care for the place while recreating space where landscape areas can be revitalised in the future park. Guiding the transformation of a complex site with incredible potential, the design team’s collaboration with First Nations designers has resulted in contemporary expressions of culture in combination with a playful interpretation of the industrial heritage. AWARD NEWS: We were very happy to join our White Bay Power Station team at the recent 30th edition of the National Trust of Australia (NSW) Heritage Awards at Jones Bay Wharf, Sydney. The @whitebaypowerstation took out the Built Conservation Award (Large Scale) and the prestigious Judge’s Choice Award (best in show!). Congratulations to our client Placemaking NSW and everyone across the design, project management and construction teams on the achievement. The National Trust described the project as “a once in a lifetime conservation project of exceptional historic, technical and social significance.
