Remembrance and resilience: In 1938, the first Day of Mourning marked a crucial milestone in the fight for Aboriginal rights and recognition. On the 26th of January, the voices of the oppressed echoed through Sydney, igniting a flame of resistance that continues to burn bright today.
As we reflect on this historic event, we celebrate the remarkable progress and triumphs our people have made. From the depths of struggle, we’ve risen, reclaiming culture, rights, and identity. Let’s honour the past, embrace the present, and strive for an even brighter future.

Calling all Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander artists!
Entries are now open for the National NAIDOC Poster Competition 2026.
Each year, the NAIDOC poster becomes a powerful visual celebration of culture, history and the strength of our people, shared in schools, workplaces and communities right across the country.
The 2026 NAIDOC Week theme: 50 Years of Deadly - marks five decades of NAIDOC Week, a week dedicated to amplifying and celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and cultures.
For fifty years, NAIDOC themes have spoken to survival, resistance, culture and pride. 50 Years of Deadly is both a reflection and a declaration. It acknowledges the strength it has taken to reach this milestone, not by chance, but because generations of people refused to be silenced.
Held from 5–12 July 2026, this milestone theme honours the activists, Elders and communities who have sustained and carried the NAIDOC movement across generations.
This is your opportunity to reflect on that legacy through art - to honour the past, celebrate the present and inspire the future.
Your artwork could become the official face of NAIDOC Week 2026 and be seen nationwide!
