Coastal cities have long thrived as bustling hubs of trade and culture. But with climate change altering our shorelines, we face new challenges. Rising seas, fiercer storms, and erosion demand urgent solutions. At Hunter's Point South in NYC, we’re leading by example. This former industrial zone is now a beacon of sustainable development, harmonizing with nature to guard against floods and rising tides. Hear more from Vincent Lee, Principal, on Hunter's Point South and explore the actions were taking to build resilience into coastal cities via the link in our bio. #WeAreArup #ChangingCoastlines #UrbanResilience #ClimateAction #HuntersPointSouth

By using mass timber on 80 M’s vertical extension, we were able to reduce both cost and disruption. This low-carbon, lightweight material, which also acts as a carbon storage medium, meant a quicker build and minimal intervention to the existing structure, allowing occupants to remain in situ during construction. Why retrofit and how is retrofit relevant to my industry? “Retrofit is relevant across all sectors of buildings” says Retrofit Leader, Mike Edwards. With reuse and circular economy becoming the norm, there has been no better time to decide to retrofit. Retrofit is no longer a niche strategy - it’s a necessity.

When we built our cities, we pushed nature out. Now we need to invite it back, to help solve the climate and nature crisis. In our latest Digital for Nature video, Dima Zogheib and Damien McCloud explore how digital can help us understand complex urban ecosystems, design multifunctional nature-based solutions, and monitor performance so we can scale impact with confidence. Are circular materials not scalable or reliable in commercial retrofits? “I don’t think that is true. There’s a growing suite of standards and regulations that’s driving circularity in the built environment.” says Retrofit Leader, Graeme DeBrincat. Retrofit is already proving that circular materials can scale - powered by fast‑maturing, regulation‑driven supply chains and a market that’s rapidly professionalising. Circular solutions aren’t niche anymore; they’re commercially viable and increasingly mainstream. Want to learn more? Do existing buildings limit ESG reporting? Not necessarily. “When you retrofit an existing building, there’s no reason why you can’t apply smart technology,” says Retrofit Leader, Mike Edwards. Retrofit creates opportunities to integrate smart technologies that capture the high-quality data needed for ESG reporting. This means that by retrofitting an asset, key environmental benchmarks such as NABERS and EPC ratings can still be achieved. Want to learn more? With the right investment and delivery strategy, the UK could unlock over 90,000 jobs and up to £194bn in GVA to 2040 by upgrading the electricity grid. These benefits extend well beyond the power system itself. Services - including technology, finance, education and professional industries - are projected to gain £95bn in additional GVA, reflecting the wider system value of a grid that can support electrification at scale. But realising this potential will depend on decisions made within the energy sector today: accelerating strategic investment, strengthening supply chain capability, and adopting delivery models that reduce risk and keep critical infrastructure on schedule. For policymakers, investors, system planners, network operators and delivery partners, Gridunlocked sets out the evidence behind where targeted action can have the greatest impact. Learn more about how the UK can invest wisely to unlock the full socioeconomic value of a modern electricity grid. Download Gridunlocked via the link in our bio. #Gridunlocked #UKInvestment #Delivery

Can only new builds achieve ESG goals? “Actually, retrofitting buildings can meet or exceed ESG goals in a number of ways, by avoiding embodied carbon demolition and construction, improving energy efficiency and applying circularity principles” says Retrofit Leader, Jess Kennedy. Retrofit can avoid embodied carbon from demolition and rebuild whilst improving operational performance. It can also deliver social value, from preserving community heritage to improving occupier wellbeing, demonstrating commitment to ESG in the long-term. Want to learn more? Read our latest article by Associate and Retrofit Leader, Julia Allison discussing how retrofit can lead to a strong return on investment, via the link in our bio. #Retrofit #Decarbonisation #WeAreArup

“It's a turning point in our lives” Over the past six years we have been working with our UK Delivery Team partners Mace (@macegroup ) and Gleeds (@gleedsglobal ) and the Peru Government to speed up the delivery of high-quality schools, health facilities and flood protection infrastructure, while raising national standards and capacity. In our latest Faces of Change mini documentary, the communities benefiting from this international standard infrastructure describe the difference it is making to their lives and their livelihoods. Hear the impact in their own words - watch the full film via the link in our bio.

11 & 12 Wellington Place has been named Project of the Year – Workplace (New) at the recent CIBSE Building Performance Awards. Designed by MEPC, 11 & 12 Wellington Place reimagines the post-pandemic office, with a strong focus on sustainability and performance. A shift in the building’s sustainability strategy in 2020 required the original design to be enhanced, prioritising reduced energy demand and minimising reliance on fossil fuels. We provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) services and acted as lead NABERS consultant, working in partnership with architect TP Bennett and contractor Wates. 12 Wellington Place has also been home to our Leeds office since 2024.
