When Mott MacDonald Fellow and regional geotechnics leader Nick Mace moved to Singapore over twenty years ago he embarked on a journey that has seen him design some of the country's most important underground infrastructure.
"I get real satisfaction from the projects that I have been involved with because I get to use them. I regularly go through the road tunnels, and the metro tunnels," he says.
Starting with the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway, Nick has developed deep geotechnical expertise and worked on a wide range of structures throughout Southeast Asia, including Singapore's metro, Changi Airport's new terminal building and the North-South Corridor project.
In this video Nick talks about the challenging world of underground construction and his passion for developing shared understanding and supporting the next generation of technical leaders.
Discover his career journey from winning structural engineering awards and undertaking a geotechnical engineering PhD in the US to leading some of the most challenging underground projects in the world.

Thank you to @sizewellc digital director Kate Brady for bringing some honest reflections about her working life during one of our Stand Tall Network events, last week.
These sessions bring together women across our business to connect, learn and strengthen their career journeys in the energy and infrastructure sector.
Our latest session included insights Clare Rhodes-James and Dave Beare from our own teams alongside those shared by Kate. The event offered honest reflections on navigating a sector where the majority of the workforce is male, building confidence and shaping the future of energy through women’s leadership.
A huge thank you to our speakers and to everyone who joined us for the event at our Fleet Place office in London and online.
Events like this are vital in amplifying women’s voices, sharing practical career guidance and supporting the next generation of female talent across our advisory community.
Water is an incredible resource. 💧
Each year on 22 March, World Water Day brings challenges affecting reliability, affordability and equality into focus, including water resource management, resilience and water quality.
Addressing these challenges relies on passing crucial knowledge on to the next generation, who will continue to turn the seemingly impossible into the possible.
In this video, Mott MacDonald Fellow Sun Yan Evans, FREng, FICE, FCIWEM, CEng reflects on the role water plays in our lives and the complexity of managing it well.
When a diverse range of perspectives are involved in the design of water systems and services, it helps them perform better over time and serve communities more effectively.
Read about Sun Yan’s fascination with the power of water and how it shaped her career spanning more than 40 years in our blog. You'll find the link in our bio.

If we asked you to describe your motivation for working on complex and transformative infrastructure projects, what would you say?
For Fellow Chris Chalk, his motivation sparked a 46-year career with us, starting as a graduate before taking his career to new heights in aviation.
“I see my work as a way of helping to keep the world moving. Aviation connects families and friends, and enables business and trade, and I’m proud to play a part in making that possible.”
Since working on a project at the UK’s Birmingham Airport in 1990, Chris has helped grow our aviation capability with talented colleagues across the globe, contributing to 100 different airports in 50 countries.
Chris has also been integral to shaping the aviation industry, including his work as former chair of the British Aviation Group and as a lead contributor for editions of the International Air Transport Association (IATA)‘s Airport Development Reference Manual.
Chris’s story has been shaped by his firm dedication to technical excellence, combined with the motivation to make a difference for all. As a Mott MacDonald Fellow, he now spends a big portion of his time mentoring the aviation leaders of tomorrow.

Fairness isn’t just ethical, it should be an essential element of fast-tracking decarbonisation.
At Carbon Crunch London 2025, Climate Change Committee chair Nigel Topping explained why fairness matters for faster decarbonisation.
His point? If people feel the transition is being done to them, rather than for them, momentum stalls. Fairness helps maintain public consent and keep competitiveness on track.
While Nigel warned that climate risks are rising, he added that are opportunities also increasing. From green steel and hydrogen to new technologies, businesses that innovate to both improve decarbonisation and efficiency now will lead the race to net zero, as well as profitability.
