“Designerly observations of scale, form, topography, materiality, biodiversity, seasonal and climatic effects lead ultimately to inform how garden focused strategies affect the ways people use, experience and practice being in gardens.” Gini Lee - Gardens: Taylor Cullity Lethlean. Reflecting on more than thirty-five years of TCL’s garden thinking, our forthcoming publication explores gardens across public and private places, large and small, cultivated and wild, temporary and enduring. This question - What is a Garden? - sits at the centre of both the upcoming book and our Melbourne Design Week exhibition and panel discussion. The MDW event is currently SOLD OUT. If you have a ticket and cannot come, please head to Eventbrite and cancel your order so that someone else can join in. "Quite soon it was realised that gardens – or an idea of what might a garden be - appeared in many guises across many projects, including those that are generally seen as landscapes beyond the realm of gardening. Time was spent musing on the primary ideas around ‘what is a garden’ and what features or elements might constitute a garden." Gini Lee in Gardens: Taylor Cullity Lethlean. (coming out soon) We will delve into this question and more at our Melbourne Design Week Exhibition and talk. Where: TCL, 385 Drummond St, Carlton VIC 3053 When: Thursday 21 May, 5:30–9:00pm Panel discussion: 6:30pm Free event. Spaces are limited. Tickets in Bio. At Maritima Brighton, landscape becomes the connective tissue: shaping movement, outlook, community and a deeper relationship to the site’s coastal legacy. TCL are undertaking the landscape architecture for a new residential community by @GoldenAgeGroup , with architecture by @Carr_au . Centred around the restored heritage-listed Maritima House, the project brings together 83 townhouses, shared wellness spaces and lush coastal gardens framed by heritage-protected trees. Embedded in Brighton’s bayside setting, the landscape approach responds to the calm, restorative qualities of the coast while supporting a refined model of community living. Boathouse Reserve at Lake Caroline is being reimagined as a new lakeside destination for Caroline Springs, with a new playspace, café, event lawn and pier that expand everyday use and community life around the water. Developed through TCL’s Lake Caroline master plan with Melton City Council, the proposal brings together play, ecology and activation, creating space for picnics, gatherings, markets, lakeside events and water-based activity, while strengthening the reserve as a civic and recreational heart for the neighbourhood. Melton City Council is seeking feedback on the concept design for the Boathouse Reserve. Feedback closes TODAY, 20 April 2026! Last night, Breakout Creek / Purruna Pari Stage 3 won the 2025 Place Leaders Award for Environmental Placemaking, a powerful recognition of what landscape-led infrastructure projects can achieve. This project shows how intangible understandings of place can be revealed through interventions at many scales, from integrated artworks to the bold sculpting of landform and watercourse. By transforming a flood channel into a living waterway, opening previously fenced land to the community, and improving equitable access, the project brings ecology, identity and public life together in one connected landscape. #TaylorCullityLethlean #PlaceLeaders #EnvironmentalPlacemaking #BreakoutCreek #PurrunaPari #LandscapeArchitecture #PublicRealm #BlueGreenInfrastructure #KaurnaCountry @placeleaders @GreenAdelaideSA @CharlesSturtSA @westtorrens @sawatercorp

We’re excited to share that Cameron Hocking, Student Landscape Architect at TCL, has been awarded the LFA Ewings Scholarship. Camy’s proposal, Serious Fun, explores how playful urbanism and adaptive reuse can foster stronger care, connection and respect between people and their environment. The scholarship will support a three-week study tour, taking Camy through Australian and European case studies to research how humour, play and reuse can shape more vibrant public landscapes. Congratulations Camy, a brilliant and well-deserved achievement. #TaylorCullityLethlean #TCL #LandscapeArchitecture #LFAScholarship #LandscapeFoundationAustralia #PublicRealm #UrbanDesign #PlayfulUrbanism #AdaptiveReuse

A UDIA National Award for Excellence last night! A project carved into the South Yarra escarpment, where landscape leads and architecture follows. Terraces, gardens, stairs and courtyards settle into the slope to create a residential precinct that feels calm, generous and deeply connected to place. Density here is not imposed. It is planted, stepped and woven through the land. Braided Pathways: A Practice Sustained by Difference Hosted by FOLAR, join our Director Kate Cullity for an online talk reflecting on TCL’s PhD-by-practice, how differences in background and method can become a studio’s greatest strength. She will delve into how varied disciplinary backgrounds (urban design, architecture, visual art, biology and social planning) can shape a collaborative practice that stretches beyond the usual conventions of landscape architecture. A reminder that the most resilient work is often made through braided ways of seeing. Kate will also share insights from her essay More than Just Looking Good: Beauty, Aesthetic and Care. An early morning in Australia! Wednesday 15 April 2026, 4:30–5:45 am Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) | Tuesday 14 April 2026, 7:30–8:45pm (British Standard Time) Online via Zoom (with Q+A) Image: 'Seeing Woods for Trees,' is a permanent garden and sculptural installation to commemorate the exemplary career of the High Court Judge Sir Anthony Mason.
