With Uncommon Creative Studio (@uncommon.creative.studio ), Nils Leonard (@nilsleonard ) channels his passion for arts and culture into a genre-defying and award-winning creative agency. His big rule: “We don’t make sh*t ads.”     Nils Leonard has a story to tell. When he was a young man, he worked at one of those big advertising agencies – you know the type. One that was spread across seven floors of a building in hierarchical fashion. The creatives were in charge and positioned on the top floor, while he toiled in a menial position down below on the third.     One day, he made a discovery… Read the full interview with Nils from Port Issue 36 at the link in bio. With Salone del Mobile in full swing, French-Canadian designer Philippe Malouin (@philippemalouin ) still found the time on Sunday to introduce his “Vite,” the new moka pot for Alessi (@alessi_official ), over an eggs-and-coffee brunch. Ahead of the event hosted at the satisfyingly perfect Casa Gregotti (@cassagregotti ), Malouin met with Port’s Contributing Features Director, Stuart Brumfit (@stuart_brumfitt ), to explain coffee rituals, his creative philosophies and why Italians (and Japanese) do it better.  Malouin’s “Vite” follows in a long line of moka pots by the Italian brand, yet none have originated quite like this one – in the scrapyards of Ossola, just a few minutes from the shores of Lake Orta, where Alessi is based. There he identified rough-hewn forms, combined them into various proposals and developed them into this final product. The result resembles a screw (‘vite’ in Italian). “Whenever I give a talk, I speak about how I work and how I make things. I first make things by hand, then an accident usually happens, then I find one detail that’s nice, then I exploit it and it ends up in industrial production.” - Philippe Malouin Read the full interview at the link in bio. For Day 1 of Salone del Mobile Milano (@isaloniofficial ), the much anticipated annual design showcase of the world’s greatest, Port attended previews by Nike (@nike ) x Drop City (@dropcity_org ), Alessi (@alessi_official )and Prada (@prada ) Opening the morning at Casa Gregotti (@casagregotti ), Alessi teamed up with Canadian industrial designer Philippe Malouin (@philippemalouin ), to unveil its latest moka pot. Opting for an initial design process that steers away from sketch work in favour of material and prototype sourcing, Phillippe dived into metal junkyards to establish the latest collaboration. With its corkscrew bottom, Alessi once again proves its ability to place innovation in the home. Later in the day, Nike presented NikeAir_Lab in collaboration with Dropcity, an emerging Milanese center for architecture and design with a focus on research, imagination and experimentation. An exploration of Nike’s enduring obsession with Air past, present and future, NikeAir_Lab invites the global design community in with a rare look at prototypical samples and material explorations. The center remains open for the rest of the week for public viewing. Before the heavens opened and hid the sun, Prada held its new edition of Prada Frames In Sight, the annual symposium curated by Formafantasma (@formafantasma ). The evening cocktail saw a special performance by experimental pianist Precious Renee Lee (@preciousreneetucker ), and later opened the Basilica for its evening session - a concert by Hania Rani (@haniarani ). Port will be attending Salone from the 19th - 22nd of April. @karlaotto @purple @prada

🏳️‍⚧️ Today marks International Transgender Visibility Day 🏳️‍⚧️ Despite its founding in 2009 by American transgender activist and psychotherapist Rachel Crandall-Crocker (@rachelcrandallcrocker ), this day has, in recent years, taken on even greater significance. Amid the rise of hate-driven and right-wing scapegoating ideologies, it stands as a powerful reminder of the work our societies still need to undertake. In 2021, Joe Biden became the first U.S. president to formally recognise the day through an official proclamation. Since then, shifting political narratives have increasingly used the transgender community as a tool for division — spreading misinformation, inciting hostility, and amplifying ideologies that separate rather than unite. Today, we reflect on women who have not only contributed to Port, but who also embody and amplify messages of love, acceptance, and shared humanity. International Transgender Visibility Day is a moment to honour the living while acknowledging those we have lost. Let it not be a day defined solely by mourning, but one of collective recognition — that a future built together will always be stronger than one lived apart. Last week, on Thursday 19th March, The Dean Group (@thedean ) officially opened The Dean Berlin, marking its first expansion into mainland Europe. With locations already in Galway, Dublin and Cork, the Irish-founded group welcomed 700 guests from across Berlin’s creative community for its launch party. With 81 rooms across five floors, guests explored the full extent of the hotel in a way rarely experienced. Rooms on each floor were open for lounging, conversation and discovery, offering a wide spectrum of entertainment throughout the night. Space was cleared in Benedict’s (@benedictberlin ), the hotel’s ground-floor all-day breakfast hub, for sets from Irish DJ Cormac, alongside Berlin-based ChewChew and Spencer Parker. Upstairs, Martion (@martion_audiosysteme ) hosted the Listening Room, featuring performances from avant-pop artist Jeannel (@jeannel ), Nigerian-born, Irish-raised singer Toshín (@toshin_music ), and hip-hop act Short Attention Span (@therealshortattentionspan ) with Tony Sauna (@tonysauna ). Rumour has it — and Port can confirm — that Room 320, hosted by comedian and authenticity coach The Gunjan (@thegunjanshowxo ), told fortunes with a little help from Patrón. What stands out most about The Dean Berlin, beyond its distinctly Irish hospitality, is its commitment to local artistry. Lead Art Curator Jennifer Ellis (@jenncellis ), founder of APSARA (@apsara.studio ), worked alongside Thom Oosterhof (@thomoosterhofprojects ) to realise the hotel’s collection. As curator, Oosterhof commissioned 20 local artists to create 80 original works, now displayed throughout the building — from lobby to guest rooms — including a façade piece by Fiete Stolte (@fietestolte ). Entitled Wanderers, the collection “becomes both a portrait of Berlin’s creative spirit and a meditation on the search for place and perspective.” The Dean Group has also announced a forthcoming Munich location, with its first U.S. opening set for Miami later this year. Fashion Museum Antwerp (MoMu) (@momuantwerp ), has officially opened its doors to the 40th Anniversary retrospective of “The Antwerp Six”. Today Port was given the chance to experience the exhibition dedicated to Walter Van Beirendonck (@waltervanbeirendonckofficial ), Ann Demeulemeester (@anndemeulemeester_officia ), Dries Van Noten (@driesvannoten ), Dirk Van Saene (@vansaenedirk ), Dirk Bikkembergs (@bikkembergsofficial ), and the late Marina Yee (@marina.yee ). Having risen as the group that famously rocked the fashion industry during their first showcasing in A/W 1986-87, they later struggled to differentiate themselves as individuals. True to this history, MoMu collaborated with each designer individually to realise their own legacy. From Walter’s robot “Puk-Puk” through which he would express thoughts strange and detested at time, and the dark sensuality Ann has become so famed for, to the textures and patterns of Dries and Marina Yee’s avant-garde approach to art and archive, MoMu further establishes the six as trailblazers, influencers, human, and different in their own right. If you aren’t convinced, Diane Pernet (@asvof ), Tim Blanks (@timblanks ), Sarah Mower (@sarahmower_ ), Stephen Jones (@StephenJonesMillinery ), Raf Simons (@rafsimons ) and many others are present to remind you. Thank you to the teams at MoMu and Camron (@camronglobal ) for having us.
