Who are we, what do we do, and why? Re-introducing @apsara.studio .
As we build up to our five year anniversary this summer, we wanted to take a moment to share and expand on what Apsara as a studio and now project space does and stands for.
We’re shaped by our team that ranges from curation to research and exhibition design. We’re inspired by the incredible artists and creatives that have us dream and ideate thoughtfully. We’re grateful for our collaborators from museums to organisations, foundations, galleries, hospitality brands and individuals that have entrusted us.
Here’s to local to global artistic dialogue, through the lens of interweaving in a long-term manner art, space and context.
Thank you all. I’m humbled by the journey and immeasurably grateful for the support.
🖤
Huge shout out to our team: @gemadarbo@andreabluish@katharina_uhe & @greenfield_campoverde , who made our little vid.

Paloma’s work centres on the body as a vessel of biological, cultural, and emotional inheritance, examining how knowledge of genetic history shape’s identity and agency. On Mutability explores the body as a living archive, a fragile and ever-changing entity marked by mutation and transformation. Using recycled egg cartons, she reimagines fertility and creation as acts of adaptation rather than ideals of perfection. Her work questions dominant notions of health and the “perfect” body, reflecting instead on transformation, fragility, and the politics of representation.
Exhibition ‘Holding Both’ ends today 4pm.

‘A Million Dreams’, 2026, acrylic on canvas, 130 x 320, embellished with thousands of invisible beads by Maria Hatling.
A million dreams reflect on biological inheritance, time, and identity. Every girl is born carrying between 1-2 million eggs, genetic material that links her not only to her mother but also to her grandmother. Three generations coexist in a single body from the very beginning. By the age of forty, that number is reduced to fewer than a thousand, regardless of status or circumstance, a quiet reminder that biology moves independently of modern ambition.
As an adopted woman with no knowledge of my biological lineage, this realisation profoundly shifted my understanding of self. For much of my life, I saw myself as shaped almost entirely by nurture. Only later did I begin to contemplate the unseen genetic narrative I carry, even if its origins remain unknown.
The surface of the painting is embellished with thousands of shimmering beads. Decorative and luminous, it echoes our tendency to curate flawless exteriors. Beneath that shine lies a reflection on inheritance, illusion, and the fragile, finite nature of possibility.
The work invites viewers to look beyond
appearance and consider what is passed down, what remains hidden, and what quietly disappears with time.
Part of Maria Hatling x Paloma Tendero HOLDING BOTH
@mariahatling@palomatendero
Now Open: ‘Holding Both’ by Paloma Tendero (@palomatendero ) and Maria Hatling (@mariahatling ) at our project space.
“In Holding Both, we bring together two distinct practices that approach image-making and materiality from different directions. Maria’s painting and experimental printmaking operate through gesture, surface, and the slow accumulation of marks, while Paloma’s photography and sculpture engage more directly with the physical world through capture, framing, and the presence of objects in space. This contrast creates a dialogue between interpretation and documentation, between something constructed by hand and something derived from lived reality.” - Interview with Maria & Paloma
Exhibitions runs till April 25th, 2026
Programming:
- Thursday late evening, open till 8pm
- Saturday breakfast with the artists, 10am-2pm
Address: 200 Battersea Park Road, SW11 4ND

Special thank you to APSARA founder @jenncellis and to Paul at F.E. Burman for the outstanding printing of our exhibition leaflet.
Next month, ‘Look How Brightly’, launches.
The debut album of incredible friend @alexjmills , but also a bold interdisciplinary exhibition we’ve co-curated, using the themes in Alex’s album as our guide. Mostly though, it’s an unveiling moment of slow, steady, interweaving and mutually supportive collaborations across mediums and moments.
2022 is probably when it really started. ‘Into Air’ was created by Alex and @dawn___ng for a show I curated of the same name, the connection made thinking of minds and sensibilities. An incredible spark and moment was shared during @performance_exchange where singers sang to the duration of their own breath. It travelled to @friezeofficial NY in 2024 for another show I curated, performed by @carnegiehall singers. And has since stemmed off; other artist to artist collaborations, other creations. Dawn’s work lives on the cover the album, and at the heart of of our forthcoming show.
What rings for me is how one art form isn’t propping the other - it’s true and deep cross-creation. One isn’t an activation of the other: it’s a multi-lingual expression.
More details on our show soon.
We are so excited. And a little daunted. But mostly cannot wait to share this slow, big & poignant interweaving of worlds.
Please read our conversation with @mariahatling and @palomatendero about their upcoming show, 'Holding Both', at our project space.

Maria’s work explores the emotional aspect of inheritance and the complexities of motherhood, adoption, and care. Through painting, mark making and layering, she captures the memory of handwriting to address grief and tenderness. There is a tension between control and chaos, love and loss, as shifting expectations around motherhood and care emerge.
