There’s no shortage of creative talent spilling out of fashion studios around the world. Most of it comes from a handful of fashion schools whose professors and practitioners are responsible for hand-picking and nurturing the graduates who will help to shape an industry equipped for an increasingly uncertain future. It’s challenging. The professors we talked to for this feature – from Antwerp to Johannesburg – share similar concerns, such as fashion degrees not being sufficiently funded or taken seriously, despite the industry’s importance both culturally and economically. They worry about students losing the ability to touch, in a literal sense, having information overload and not having spaces to express their creativity after they graduate. Inside 10 Magazine Issue 76, we hear from the educators on fashion’s creative front line. One such person is Sonal Chauhan, an associate senior professor and discipline lead of apparel design at the National Institute of Design in India. Sonal Chauhan has been at India’s National Institute of Design since 2009. In her own practice, she has focused on uniform design, craft-based skills and workshops encouraging slow consumption, slow fashion and co-design. “Perfectionism is a blessing and a curse,” writes @lauracraik inside 10 Magazine Issue 76. “Without perfectionism, there would be no Sistine Chapel, no Water Lilies, no Virgin of the Rocks (the painting, not the cocktail). Had @prince not been such a perfectionist, Purple Rain wouldn’t be the album that it is, and I wouldn’t have spent every night of June 1985 crying myself to sleep while listening on my shitty headphones to The Beautiful Ones, angsting over a boy who seemed to hurt me every time even though he wasn’t even beautiful.” For her essay on perfectionism, Craik delves into the fashion shows she views as perfect – @dior Couture AW07, @husseinchalayanofficial AW00 and @louisvuitton AW12 to name a few. “These collections, by these designers, were so perfect that they are seared into the memory in the way that great art can lodge itself for a very long time,” she continues. “I wonder whether the designers will all die happy. Maybe perfectionists never do. And while I’ve made my peace with not being one – with never creating great art, a great feature, or even a particularly great sentence – I do ponder what lies directly below perfection. Is it, de facto, mediocrity? @girlsdontsync aren’t just dab hands behind the decks – this quartet of powerhouse selectors know what’s really important. For the second edition of their Local initiative, which launched yesterday, @relentlessenergydrink have tapped the UKG and house DJ collective – which comprises @gaia_ia , @mattychiabi , @hannahlynch_dj and @sophiav10let – to spearhead the search for four music collectives to win a share of a £20,000 nationwide grant.
