Arts and culture are at the heart of Adelaide’s identity. But does our ambitions for a creative city shape how we are planning and designing our city ?
This week we welcomed thinkers, city shapers, creative leaders and educators into our studio to consider:
Imagine if Art, Culture and Design was at the centre of everything, in the context of city making.
Who is responsible? What is holding us back?
Together with @committeeforadelaide , JPE Design Studio hosted the first in a series of workshops by leading architects and designers, focused on Adelaide in 2050 - the ADL2050 Vision Workshops. The aim is to distil to 50 actions for 2050.
Provocation and design-led thinking challenged our collective minds, led by Josephine Evans, Sharon Mackay, Keith Dougall, Kaitlin Sells, Michelle Male and Sam Dighton.

JPE has been showcased by a collaboration between @bluescopeaus and @thelocalproject with a feature of our design for the @seatonhighschool Learning Centre, a benchmark for contemporary education delivered in partnership with Department for Education, South Australia and the Department for Infrastructure and Transport .
At Seaton High School Learning Centre, the design was driven by a clear ambition - to create a contemporary environment that embodies the school’s progressive, forward-thinking ethos, together with a response to the tree filled site. It’s architecture creates a new identity for the school and its ambitions.
The carefully articulated facade introduces rhythm, depth, and shadow, breaking down the building’s scale and bringing dialogue with the landscape. Inside, the learning spaces are flexible and intuitive, supporting contemporary education through environments that foster collaboration, adaptability, and connection.
Leading architects on the project, Michelle Male and James Dujmovic are interviewed in this video, giving a rare insight into the thinking and technical innovation of the building.

The overarching concept for Warriappendi Secondary School centres on Connection to Country by acknowledging Country with understanding and respect.
Connection to Place by responding to and improving the local landscape; and Connection to People by respecting the school ethos and reflecting different Mobs who make up the Warriappendi family. Consultation was central to the project from inception. From site selection through to design, the voices of students, parents, teachers, leadership staff, governing council and the wider community have shaped the design ensuring the outcome reflects school ambitions and values.
The Interior design celebrates the Plains, River and Treetops. Full-height glazing strengthens connection to the surrounding landscape and the materials palette reflects the Adelaide Plains at ground level. The circulation spaces flow through the school’s core, symbolising the river as a meeting and gathering place. Upper-level learning areas are immersed within the tree canopy, providing a visual connection to the Adelaide Hills.
Diverse spaces include quiet pods, wellbeing areas, yarning circles, outdoor learning, STEM workshop, music room, library and a commercial kitchen supporting daily shared meals and VET programs. Flexible furniture, clear sightlines and connected breakout spaces allow teachers to adapt lessons to individual needs whilst maintaining student engagement and agency.

Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate @monikamorgensternart and her material explorations as the eighth JPE Artist in Residence presented in partnership with Guildhouse! 💫🎉
Over the past four years, in collaboration with @jpedesignstudio , Guildhouse has supported eight South Australian artists to undertake cross-disciplinary exchange with the studio. Artists are welcomed into the studio environment, participate in design charettes and workshops, and begin a reciprocal creative dialogue with the team. It was particularly special to have six previous residents present on the night to celebrate their journeys!
Through her residency, Monika worked closely with the JPE team and project suppliers to explore the expressive potential of glass and light, investigating how materiality can shape atmosphere, mood and sensory experience within the built environment.
A big thank you to Josephine Evans and the entire team at JPE for their support – we couldn't do it without you – and to Adrienne Nicholls for facilitating the in conversation with Monika at the launch.

The landscape design for Warriappendi School draws inspiration from the school logo, which represents Aboriginal people from different backgrounds coming together, the landscape design uses native planting to represent students from the Hills, Plains and Coast.
The existing site is defined by two distinct open-space zones shaped by vegetation and orientation. The southern area is densely planted, with established trees creating a sheltered and immersive environment. This landscape focuses on passive recreation with paths that thread the landscape offering students opportunity for self-regulation and reflection.
In contrast, the northern area is open with little existing vegetation. Active spaces for sports, play, socialising, and performance are provided. The play spaces are inclusive with accessible play pieces, incorporating a range of sensory and active forms of play. The equipment promotes hanging, climbing, balancing, and strength-building. These varied movements support self-regulation and meaningful play.
Multiple outdoor learning environments connect directly to specialist areas of the school. The gym canopy extends into the plaza, offering shade and shelter for large events that spill outdoors, while the canopy to the STEM learning area allows science experiments to be conducted outside.

A bush and river setting is Warriappendi Secondary School’s new home. The site is located on Kaurna Country, along the banks of Karrawirra Parri in Thebarton and the project establishes a welcoming and safe education facility with Connection to Country, Place and People underpinning the campus experience.
@warriappendi_secondary features the adaptive reuse of an existing office and laboratory building, providing both cost benefits compared to demolition and rebuild, and significant embodied carbon savings. The design team worked closely with our clients, The Department for Education and The Department for Infrastructure and Transport, and our cost consultant MBM, to explore how the existing fabric could be retained while both meeting the educational brief and embedding aboriginal perspectives into the built form.
The superstructure, facade and roofing were all retained while the carpark and basement required only light refurbishment. Where new construction was required, the focus became delivering value for money by celebrating exposed structure and services.
The existing building is a traditional, rectilinear form, contrasting with consultation findings that a First Nations design approach is often expressed through curves and fluidity. The challenge became embedding this narrative without rebuilding. Working within the existing fabric, secondary framing introduced dynamism. The flowing curve of the facade represents the movement of the river and the ceiling material, a nod to the milky way, significant in Kaurna dreamtime stories. Cost effective materials, such as carpets and wall linings were used creatively to tell a story through pattern and texture.

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Director, Josephine Evans, to the South Australian Design Review Panel.
Josephine brings a passion for good design and collaborative processes to the multi-disciplinary panel of built environment professionals who provide expert and independent advice to enhance design outcomes.
Overseen by the Office for Design and Architecture SA (ODASA), Design Review has a positive impact on larger scale projects and those of State significance during the design phase, promoting places that are contextual, inclusive, durable, valuable, high-performing and sustainable.
Josephine truly values the benefit of good design to enhance public and environmental benefit.
“I believe I can bring my learnings and experience to a wide range of
projects as I have been directly involved in a diverse range of commercial,
public, community, education, heritage and adaptive re-use typologies,
often working in a multi-disciplinary environment and in collaborations with
local, national and international studios and artists.”
The striking design of the new Adelaide Aquatic Centre is turning heads. From architecture, cultural design, to engineering brilliance, this project is a true collaboration of design partnership across disciplines.
Designed by JPE Design Studio in collaboration with @warrenmahoney and @karltelfer , in partnership with the South Australian Government and in association with the Kaurna Yerta Aboriginal Corporation, our team of consultants and contractors designed a facility that’s not just functional, but deeply connected to place, community, and wellbeing.
A big congratulations to the entire design and construction team on this momentous milestone.
