Farewell to a wonderful friend and colleague, Wes Hindmarch.
I first met Wes when I first moved to Australia 14 years ago. I was a young photographer looking for commissions in a new country, and he was one of the first people to trust me to photograph his projects. He remained both a client and a friend ever since.
He was an inspiration to me for his incredible talent as an architect, his commitment to sustainable design and Indigenous rights, and how incredibly humble, warm, and approachable he always was.
I loved hearing stories about his time in Portugal working with Álvaro Siza, and he was kind enough to put me in touch with his former colleagues there when I visited last year with my family.
I’m so grateful to have been welcomed into his beautiful family home in Kangaroo Valley during our shoots, and for him organising such amazing regional architecture events and giving me the privilege of documenting them.

The air is crisp; a south-easterly bites at exposed skin and cuts through thin jackets. The steep walk up the sandstone and quartz hill is welcomed to get the blood moving and the brain working. It’s pre-dawn. The sky burns pink with the promise of heat. We summit Tharrarletneme Hill at the north end of the Olive Pink Botanic Garden and get our first view over Mparntwe Alice Springs.

Mparntwe Alice Springs – intentionally written without parentheses or dashes – is a conflicting mouthful. Pronounced (M-ban tua), it sits at a crossroads where Country meets colonisation and history folds over itself. Climate, culture and community are bound together with both tension and care. In her introduction to the 2025 RAA event, Mparntwe – When You Come to Another Country, senior Arrernte teacher Kumalie Riley observed: “Place, people, housing and culture are all one and the same. Like time here, it all exists simultaneously.” And when it comes to housing, the scale of the challenge in the Northern Territory (NT) is huge. There are about 5,250 Aboriginal community houses, spread across 1.42 million square kilometres…

I was fortunate to spend a few hours behind the scenes at the beautiful Quarr Abbey on the Isle of Wight in June. It’s such a peaceful place and the brickwork is incredible.
We recently took some time off to travel in Europe, spending three weeks on the Isle of Wight, where I grew up. Always a pleasure to return and see family and old friends.
Looking all the way back at a trip to Nepal in 2007. These images are from a trek in the beautiful Langtang region which was tragically devastated by the 2015 earthquake. It is now safe to trek in the region again and the towns have been rebuilt with more earthquake resistant buildings outside of the landslide zone.
