Frontier Drive-In, developed by @rrael in collaboration with @muddyrobots , is an experimental installation exploring large-scale 3D printing with earth-based materials. The project operates as a research prototype investigating additive construction through locally sourced soil. The process uses layered extrusion, where wet earth is deposited in continuous paths to build walls without formwork. Geometry and material calibration define structural stability, allowing the construction to emerge directly from digital input. The printed walls act simultaneously as enclosure and load-bearing elements, with their stratified texture recording the sequence of fabrication. The project tests low-cost materials and robotic processes as an alternative to conventional construction, focusing on precision, material efficiency, and minimal waste. © @rrael ; @muddyrobots ; @3dpotter 📍 California, USA #ArchitectureLab #3DPrinting #EarthenArchitecture #DigitalFabrication #RoboticConstruction #MaterialResearch #AdditiveManufacturing

The Smoke Screen is on display at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, curated by Carlo Ratti. This very delicate and fragile 3D printed screen rising from the ashes is made of California wildfire ash and raises the questions: Can we rebuild using the ashes from the wildfires themselves? What artifacts can help us remember what we have lost? How can materials that are a product of destruction become materials for construction? Phoenix Rising. Many thanks to @labiennale and @crassociati for the invitation, and to @sjsu , @protopasta and @scotturiu for your support of this project. It is an incredible honor to have been chosen by the @cooperhewitt as a 2025 National Design Award Winner in the category of digital design for my 16 year long endeavor with @emergingobjects inventing materials, hardware, software, and processes for #addittivemanufacturing / #3dprinting . Emerging Objects has had an incredible group of collaborators over the years, many young talented employees coming from Berkeley, San Jose State University and other schools across the country. We thank them for their contributions to making the work possible. 2025 marked the 25th anniversary of the awards, which were established in 2000 as a project of the White House Millennium Council and bring national recognition to the ways in which design enriches everyday life. The festivities included an awards ceremony, surprise performances by “Making Home—Smithsonian Design Triennial” participant Davóne Tines (@alsoanoperasinger ), and music by @razorntape . But, most importantly, the evening honored this year’s winners and their exceptional contributions to design: –Kim Hastreiter, Design Visionary (@kimpaper ) -ilumiNACIÓN by Resilient Power Puerto Rico, Climate Action (@resilientpowerpr ) -Nu Goteh, Emerging Designer (@nuthervandross ) -Michael Maltzan Architecture, Architecture (@michaelmaltzanarchitecture ) -Matt Willey, Communication Design (@mrwilley ) -Emerging Objects, Digital Design (@emergingobjects , @vasfsf , @rrael ) -Melitta Baumeister, Fashion Design (@melittabaumeister ) -Little Wing Lee, Interior Design (@studio.and.projects ) -TERREMOTO, Landscape Architecture (@terremoto_landscape ) -Jules Sherman, Product Design (@redesignhealthcare ) Apologies for the cropped photos !

Ahead of the 2025 National Design Awards, we're shining the spotlight on this year's awardees. 🏆 Up next? Digital Design winner Emerging Objects (@emergingobjects )! Ronald Rael (@rrael ) and Virginia San Fratello (@vasfsf ), founders of Emerging Objects, specialize in innovations in 3D printing architecture, products, software, hardware, and materials. They view themselves as digital alchemists, material scientists, and cooks, saying they see themselves “inventing recipes that allow us to ask questions about the future of the digital world through the lens of 3D printing.” Tap the link in our bio to learn more about Rael, San Fratello, and their practice. #NationalDesignAwards __ 1. Adobe is an earthen construction technique that has been used for centuries in regions worldwide. In the American Southwest, adobe construction is traditionally performed by hand, setting adobe blocks with adobe mortar. Emerging Objects, founded by architects Ronald Rael and Virginia San Fratello, utilizes the clay-heavy soil of their studio land in Colorado to experiment with 3D printing earthen building materials for the creation of adobe structures. Years of testing and prototyping with this "hearth" material have turned the ranch landscape into an archive showcasing material creation, lifecycle, and decay. #raelsanfratello #emergingobjects

By now it’s obvious how proud I am of our Bay Area independent design community - so it’s a privilege I don’t take lightly to be interviewed in the introduction of @dezeen ’s roundup of 10 independent design studios in San Francisco. I couldn’t help but mention the pressure-cooker we work within, heavily restricted and overseen by our local government to ensure we relentlessly pursue perfection, even when it comes at the cost of small business and regular people. I have not witnessed this during my work in other cities, the rules tend to be the same but enforcement is completely different. I’m talking environmental codes, ADA, egress, the technical stuff that quietly drives our experiences and opportunities in developed cities. It’s incredible to see a few @vesselgroupshow artists, @soft.geometry , @medium__small and @ymouser , alongside friends and colleagues @sahrajajarmikhayat , @sabayazdjerdi , @studioahead , @kate.hands.co , @prowl__ , and professors from my study abroad in the Netherlands 15 years ago (!!) @rrael and @vasfsf with their studio @emergingobjects . And shout out to @10thfloor.studio who does exciting work and I hope to meet soon. Thank you @eeelleneee and @ben_dreith for roping me in. #dezeen #studioanandsheth
