From the archive: “Invisible Forces,” a duo exhibition of Yvonne Mouser’s sculptures and Jane Springwater’s drawings and prints, was presented at Municipal Bonds in 2024. While their practices and mediums differ, both artists investigate structural systems and the push-pull relationships of line, space, and volume. Their exhibition comprised two- and three-dimensional abstract works where transformation of form and relationship to the built environment play with optical effects. In their approaches, conceptual and organizational, Mouser and Springwater each delve into the energetic influences and imperceptible architecture of time.

"Recursion," a collaboration between Yvonne Mouser and Tiersa Nureyev, is the second work developed through their slot-and-tab system. The piece features rune-like brass characters—I, S, C—joined through tabs and slots to create a rhythmic pattern of lines and curves. Layered, woven structures interlock to form a fabric of braids and chance motifs.
In this work, Mouser and Nureyev extend their engagement with textile weaving and lace making while also pursuing a completely closed system. As with a Celtic knot, the intricate woven structure suggests endless cycles and inextricable connection: one part cannot be pulled without affecting another. They were also inspired by cellular division and mutation. Each motif is made up of a set of circular units that grows by one. These units reflect radially and become increasingly altered as they move away from the center.
The making of these interlocking wall sculptures is akin to creating a puzzle while simultaneously trying to solve it. Working from individual brass elements with corresponding tabs and slots, they establish a motif, then consider how repetition can be employed and disrupted. Through that process of testing and adjustment, a single composition emerges.
Mouser and Nureyev first met nearly two decades ago in a textile theory class while students at California College of the Arts. When they reconnected years later, it was with the intention of a creative exchange. That relationship has since evolved into an ongoing partnership informed by a shared interest in conceptual, material, and systems experimentation.

"Colony of Trees," a table and stools by Oakland-based artist and designer Yvonne Mouser, takes its title from a clonal aspen ecosystem—many trunks, one organism, joined underground through a shared root system. Mouser carries this structure into form: individual pieces that stand on their own yet belong to a single, connected whole. Separate elements are bound by an underlying logic of relation and shared support.
On view at FOG Design+Art, Municipal Bonds presents @ymouser 's furniture alongside @janespringwater 's exhibition of drawings in the FOCUS Section, Pier 2, Booth 403. Join us on Sunday, January 25, 11am–5pm.
