On June 24, the @naacp inducted four legendary Spartans into its Legacy Hall of Fame in recognition of their groundbreaking work as civil rights advocates: Olympic Project for Human Rights co-founders Dr. Harry Edwards, ’64 Social Science, ’16 Honorary Doctorate, and Ken Noel, ’66 BA, ’68 MA, Social Science; and Olympians Tommie Smith, ’69 Social Science, ’05 Honorary Doctorate, and John Carlos, ’05 Honorary Doctorate.
“This recognition is for all those athletes who have turned their athletic stages into platforms to advocate for that more perfect union,” says Edwards, professor emeritus of UC Berkeley and author of “The Revolt of the Black Athlete,” the seminal sports sociology text.

This spring, 11 faculty researchers took part in SJSU’s Research Impact Academy, working with Wendy Van of Open Window Communications to develop short, public-ready talks about their research and why it matters.
Turns out, Spartan research often starts deeply personal, then grows to affect all of us.
Stay tuned as we share the talks over the coming months. You won’t be disappointed. 🎤 📡

For nearly five decades, generations of students, faculty, staff, and local classrooms came to know and love Jeremiah, the desert tortoise who lived in Duncan Hall.
Estimated to have been at least 85 years old, more likely in his 90s, Jeremiah came to SJSU from a private citizen in the 1970s and served as a Science Education Resource Center wildlife ambassador. His charisma and demeanor quickly made him the program's most popular representative. Whether sunning himself outside Duncan or patiently visiting classrooms across the region, he introduced 𝘩𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴 of people to wildlife, science, and curiosity in a way only Jeremiah could.
This week, the College of Science had to say goodbye to this dear old friend. Thank you to the caregivers, veterinary staff, faculty, and students who looked after Jeremiah for so many years, and sincere condolences on your loss. 💚
What’s up Spartans!
Yes, it’s finals week. Yes, your screen time report is judging you. But also, you’re almost there.
A few more days of locked-in energy, questionable sleep schedules, and “one more chapter” lies … then it’s time to kick back and relax!
Finish strong, Spartans. You’ve got this. 🎓
