I went off social media for 3 months and I think I’m gonna keep sliding off this space and see what happens. It’s a little counter intuitive to post about that here, but I know a lot of us are considering divesting from these platforms. Some things I noticed:
I barely missed it and I think that means I was ready for the break. What I missed the most was being tuned into community events and think pieces/education about the political moment surrounding us. I logged on once or twice a month to check my feed for upcoming events and put them on my Google calendar lol. I’m still working on meeting these needs IRL and am developing an affinity for a good bulletin board.
I watched a lot of trash TV oops. I love my housewives. Screen addiction is real. At the same time, a devotion to analog activities has intensified during this 3 month period, and I’m excited about where this pull will take me as a writer. I’m also working on creating the habit of paying with cash.
I divested from Amazon, something I’ve tried to do several times before. But that means I’m going to Walmart. We’re not all in a position to divest from everything. It’s really hard. Boycott is a practice and practices require a playful, curious attitude and a commitment to keep going. ♥️ 🍷 🧚🏻
Socia media break, three months! Maybe forever, muahahaha. Going to spend the winter admiring moss, reading, dancing, envisioning analog projects, and pouring wine at @addisonfarms .
Catch me there or through old fashioned email :)
1 year after Helene: I helped @totscicle create an NC wine tasting for our local tasting group, @purpleteethavl at @addisonfarms . A really welcoming group of somms and wine buyers in Asheville that meets monthly to taste brown-bagged wines sat down to taste through 16 local wines. What a treat.
Then, I poured wine at the Trial To Table event by @utopianseedproject featuring none other than: peas! I listened to chefs talk about working with the ingredient and reflecting on the role food plays in emotional survival during a crisis.

A world where you are safer and more free is a world where I am safer and more free. A world where you are targeted is a world where I am targeted. Recognizing that our pain and our peace are intrinsically connected, solidarity naturally arises.
How to make wine: let love and anger balance in your heart like acid and sugar in the dog days of summer. Pick when it seems right or ask a friend, crush and bottle.
Lots of learning going on over here, how about y’all? Also, is that another millennial? Geez they’re everywhere!

A harvest visit to @elizabethhigley_wine at @windsorruncellars and @erickofhurtado at @stardustcellars turns into a game of count the millennials.
Swipe for the chaotic joy of finding yourself tailing a delivery of dornfelder in amish country. Thanks to my car companions, millennials two and three @banditibliss and @griot_tasso for joining me.
Can you find the link? I swear it’s in my bio.

It was truly an honor to sit beside and in front of many of the people who have inspired my work over the last two years and participate in a panel about sustainability, culture, and wine growing in the southeast. @abvferments has carved out a space to celebrate and reflect on the wine world beyond European varietals, and in doing so, they’ve led people like me to arrive at their own doorsteps.
I left feeling a part of something greater happening along the east coast, something that starts with wine but doesn’t end there. Thank you so much to @griot_tasso@reggieleonard@elizabethhigley_wine@deneshafarms for the conversation and to @abvferments@co_fermented@preshiftnyc@sansbibie for bringing your magic to NC!
Historians have tied the lore of Virginia Dare, the first English child born on North American soil, to the 400+ year old Muscadine growing on Roanoke Island. As birthright citizenship is being attacked, I drive to the vine and wonder about her significance.
You can find the story in my handy dandy newsletter, link in the bio.

Think globally, act locally. Study the Buddhist practice of renunciation. Boycott can be a lifelong journey. Begin to be here less and less, be where you know you belong more and more.
We will peel back grief in layers, we will name everything, we will prescribe the sweet medicine of laughter, our humanity will guide us to each other, it’s our birthright.
