New Mexico is easy to fall in love with. There’s something palpable in the air there — an energy I haven’t felt anywhere else. I shot my second feature with my director @levingarbisch against its vast, haunting landscapes. It became the perfect psychological terrain for Spiral Into the Yellow Void. We follow Amy, an intuitive healer with the ability to extract other people’s suffering into the form of a yellow liquid — while quietly battling her own personified depression that trails her like a malevolent shadow. We began act I in 4:3 (one of my favorite intimate aspect ratios), holding her world close and contained. As her hidden depression is exposed, the frame expands to 1.85 — her inner life no longer confined, but revealed to everyone around her. There’s nothing more exhilarating than shooting on film. For this project, my director @naomichristie and I designed a Steadicam oner (on Super8!!!) and entered it into @straight_8_ , a global Super8 competition that’s been running for 30 years. The rules are wild: you shoot on a single cartridge of Super8 and edit entirely in camera. No retakes. No post. No color correction. The soundtrack is created afterward — and you just hope and pray it all syncs. I Have Something to Tell You is a dance film that follows a guy pursuing a girl in a slightly stalker-like way… only for the story to flip in the final moment. We shot on a Canon 814XL and rigged my iPhone running Artemis on top as a makeshift optical viewfinder. We closed the eyepiece, shot at a 5.6, and maintained a consistent distance throughout since there was no possibility for focus pulling. 500T stock film because I needed all of the exposure I could get. The result? We landed in the Top 8 winner and premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and BFI IMAX in London. It was one of the most creatively thrilling experiences I’ve had — and the community of filmmakers involved was a big highlight. Highly recommend!! Hello everyone! I’m @rayana — your host for the week. I’ll be sharing some of my work, behind-the-scenes, and a glimpse into my creative process. I recently joined ICFC+ as a new member and am so excited to be part of this global community of inspiring filmmakers. It’s truly a gift to love what you do — and even more meaningful to share that passion with like-minded artists around the world. I’m a Thai-American cinematographer based in Los Angeles. I was born and raised in the DMV (DC–Maryland–Virginia) area and studied Criminology at the University of Maryland. A big part of my upbringing was also shaped by spending summers in Thailand, where I developed a deep connection to my cultural roots and spirituality. For much of my early life, I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I didn’t discover cinematography until my late-twenties. The turning point came when I found a book at an airport in Thailand — The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. That book changed my life and helped me make sense of the signs that had been quietly guiding me toward this path. Today, I’m a working cinematographer focused on narratives, commercials, documentaries, and music videos. I’m a graduate of AFI’s MFA Cinematography program (2022) and an alum of the AFI Cinematography Intensive for Women (2018). I’ve been honored to receive the @womeninfilmla Cinematography Fellowship (2025), the @the__asc Vision Mentorship with @nancyschreiber_asc (2025–2026), and to be part of Issa Rae’s @colorcreative “Find Your People” cohort (2023). My films have screened globally at Marché du Film at Cannes Film Festival, British Film Institute, LALIFF, AFI Fest and Edmonton International Film Festival.
