in the shanghainese dialect, “rock” and “tongue” are pronounced the same. there is a known saying (according to my mom): a tongue can kill you like a rock can kill you. many artists pair scholar rocks with writing, putting rock and word (or tongue) naturally in dialogue with each other. so what becomes of the (imitation) rock and its wooden base when separated? I have been thinking about what is shared in a distanced, diasporic relationship. Immigration as a condition always felt, experienced, and passed on. there is a particular type intimacy, one informed by absence. wanted to share some stills from INHERITORS, a passion project of mine that has been pushed and pulled through the trenches by myself and my loved collaborators! We are screening at @lashortsfest on July 24th 3:15pm @ Regal LA Live. it feels fitting to have a late afternoon screening for this film… when a day stretches too long, many things can be felt in a space. i feel like this project really represented my entire life’s energy and heart the few years we were making it. film is a (fickle) archive of love and grief. Hi everyone, i’d like to share my zine called Fickle Archive. It’s 16 pages of original text and photography along with some stills from Inheritors, a film we are now submitting to festivals. I’ve been obsessed with archives as “fickle” for a long time. in a lot of ways, production designing and filmmaking feels like an act of making temporal archives (sets) that get altered and torn down as quickly as they are created. i love exploring that idea, especially as it relates to my Chinese American identity.
