Congratulations to THE CORINTHIAN in Waltham, MA, for being awarded a 2026 Paul & Niki Tsongas Award, celebrating people and projects that have displayed the highest levels of commitment to historic preservation in the Commonwealth. /tsongas-award Join us for the Awards celebration on Thursday, June 11, at Fenway Park's 521 Overlook. Sponsorship + tickets: /awards From MA Rep. Thomas M. Stanley of the 9th Middlesex District: "The Corinthian, formerly known in the Waltham community as the Saint Charles Borromeo Church, served as an anchor in the City for religious life and education, where hundreds of students attended the St. Charles School throughout the decades. Many residents have fond memories of growing up in this neighborhood, attending church, and graduating from School in the heart of downtown Waltham’s Southside. The Corinthian, now reconstructed as 20 unique condominiums, made tremendous strides in honoring the legacy of preserving the Italian Renaissance Revival architecture of St. Charles. First constructed in 1915, over a century ago, the Church has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989, and the development project made it a priority to showcase the towering Corinthian columns and terracotta brick structure of the building. This is a refreshing and beautiful sight of architecture in the community, preserving the historic and cultural heritage of the story of Waltham." Congratulations to the EMERY GROVER RENOVATIONS project in Needham, MA, for being awarded a 2026 Robert H. Kuehn, Jr. Award, honoring projects that meld collaborative partnerships with creative and cutting-edge ideas. /kuehn-award Join us for the celebration on Thursday, June 11, at Fenway Park's 521 Overlook. Sponsorship + tickets at link in bio. The Emery Grover building was constructed in 1898 as a high school for the Town of Needham. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the building is architecturally significant as a striking example of the Second Renaissance Revival, with a distinctive orange brick exterior, arched openings, and slate roof. For 50 years, Needham’s School Administration offices have occupied the space. Once the high school population outgrew the building, it was used as overflow educational space, then hastily and inaccessibly used as administration space. Faced with moving the School Administration or renovating the existing building, Needham residents were concerned that an empty building would invite demolition, and so increased public support saved the building. With creative space usage for offices, meeting spaces, and facilities, along with all aspects being brought up to code, the building was made fully accessible and is now enjoyed by all. Completed in October 2024, the Emery Grover building enjoys a new and improved life in the Town. Congratulations to ST. Sponsorship + tickets at link in bio. In her letter of support, Kathy Kottaridis, Director of the Office of Historic Preservation for the City of Boston, said: "Located in Roxbury’s historic John Eliot Square and designed by architect Ralph Adams Cram, St. Luke’s Chapel is a significant part of the St. John St. James campus. For generations, the campus has played an important role in the civic and spiritual life of the surrounding neighborhood. The restoration ensures that it continues in an active and meaningful way. The project team approached the work with a strong commitment to preservation standards, restoring historic fabric while addressing long-deferred maintenance and modern needs. Equally important, the rehabilitation reestablishes the chapel as a vital community gathering place, now supporting worship, cultural programming, and public events." Congratulations to ZEITERION (formerly known as the Zeiterion Theatre), recipient of the 2026 Mayor Thomas M. Menino Legacy Award, honoring projects that transformative, embrace the community, and forge meaningful partnerships! /menino-award Join us in celebration of the 2026 awardees on Thursday, June 11, at Fenway Park's 521 Overlook! Sponsorship + tickets at link in bio. Completed in January 2026, the nominating team said: "The Zeiterion Performing Arts Center demonstrates how historic preservation can actively shape the future of a community. More than a renovation and restoration, it represents a renewed investment in a cultural landmark that has long defined downtown New Bedford, ensuring that it continues to serve as a place of gathering, expression, and civic pride for generations to come. First opened in 1923, the Zeiterion is one of the last remaining theaters from a once vibrant network that animated the city’s cultural life. Its survival is the result of sustained community commitment. Saved from demolition in the 1980s through the leadership of the @whalenewbedford @CityofNewBedford and local advocates, the building was given new life as a nonprofit performing arts center. The recent renovation builds on that legacy, demonstrating that preservation is not a one-time act, but an ongoing responsibility." Congratulations to the STURBRIDGE SENIOR CENTER, recipient of the 2026 Robert H. Kuehn, Jr. Award, honoring projects that combine partnerships with cutting-edge ideas. /kuehn-award From the project team: "The Sturbridge Senior Center is more than a beautifully restored historic building—it is a living example of what happens when a community chooses to invest in its past to support its future. At its heart is the 1874 Snellville District #2 Schoolhouse, a beloved Italianate brick landmark that has stood for generations as a place of learning and civic life. Rather than losing this important piece of Sturbridge’s history, the Town reimagined it—carefully restoring the original building and pairing it with a thoughtfully designed addition to create a vibrant, modern Senior Center. Today, the building once again welcomes people through its doors—not as a relic of the past, but as an active and essential part of daily community life. This project is a powerful reminder that preservation is not just about saving structures—it is about sustaining the places that bring people together. The Senior Center now serves as a hub for connection, offering programs, support services, and opportunities for engagement that help residents age in place with dignity and purpose. It continues the legacy of the schoolhouse as a place of learning and gathering, adapted for today and ready for tomorrow." Celebrating our first winner of the 2026 Robert H. Kuehn, Jr. Award, honoring projects that combine partnerships with cutting-edge ideas, is WADSWORTH HOUSE RENOVATION PROJECT, the second oldest building at Harvard University! Miguel Escuer, MS, PMP, Senior Project Manager with Harvard University Housing and Real Estate, said: "The Wadsworth house Renovation Project sought to restore the second oldest surviving building on the Harvard campus where General George Washington took command of the Continental Army in July of 1775. As a recognized national historic landmark at the heart of Cambridge, The House serves as the main entrance to Harvard’s historic yard greeting students in their quest for knowledge and new beginnings, echoing the perseverance of America’s founding fathers in their pursuit of freedom. Successfully restoring a 300-year-old house is not an easy feat. The project encountered numerous unknown conditions including hidden windows, stairs, roofing systems, and a dried water well in the North basement. However, the biggest challenge came when the original foundation was exposed and showed significant deterioration jeopardizing the entire structure and feasibility of our project. ... I am particularly proud of the team’s resilience, determination, and creativity to troubleshoot these challenges while keeping Harvard’s interest at the forefront as stewards of this historic property." Congratulations to BOSTON PUBLIC GARDEN CHILD FOUNTAIN RESTORATION, our first winner of the 2026 Olmsted Award, honoring projects that preserve cultural and historic landscapes! /olmsted-award From Rebecca DiTommaso, Director of Capital Projects & Parks Care at Friends of the Public Garden: "To celebrate the Friends’ 50th Anniversary, we worked closely with the team at Halvorson Design Studio to meaningfully enhance the Arlington Street entrance of the Public Garden. Throughout the project, the design team gave great consideration to the historic context of our country’s first public botanic garden, while balancing the need to bring the space up to current standards. The artful adjustments to the grading improved accessibility and enhanced visibility and sight lines. The fountains, which had been non-functional for decades, now provide a beautiful and welcoming space for visitors to gather and enjoy. This project has greatly improved the Public Garden and is enjoyed by all who visit." We are thrilled to kick off Preservation Month with the 2026 winner of PM's ELIOT AWARD. Congratulations goes to THE UNITARIAN CHURCH OF BARNSTABLE! This project received an overwhelming amount of support from community members like Jack Hill, President of Hyannis Whale Watcher Cruises, who wrote: "As a longtime member of the Barnstable community and a business owner that caters to thousands of off cape visitors, I know the value of maintaining the historic nature of our village. As a boy, I attended elementary school at the Old Schoolhouse building at the Unitarian Church as did my grandparents many years before me. The importance of preserving the ties to our past that historic buildings provide cannot be underestimated. The Unitarian Church of Barnstable stands as an iconic monument to all that makes our village a special place. The ongoing renovation of the structure has been a joy for all to see from its now gleaming copper sheathed steeple to its regilded weathervane."
