Kudos to the recent successes of Alex Bakri’s HABIBI HUSSEIN, which premiered last September at
@busanfilmfest ’s Wide Angle section and was just screened at
@cairofilms a couple of weeks ago, where it picked up the International Critics’ Week Shadi Abdel Salam Award! 🎉📽️🇵🇸
Well done, team =)
The project was presented in-progress at #CannesDocs back in 2021, as part of the Palestine Showcase of Docs-in-Progress, hosted by

HABIBI HUSSEIN
Directed by Bilal Alkhatib
Produced by May Odeh (Odeh Films, Palestine), Thomas Kaske (kaske film, Germany)
Palestine, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Sweden I 96’ I 2025
Hussein Darby, the last projectionist of Cinema Jenin in Palestine, thought it was a golden opportunity. When a German NGO arrived to restore the theater, Hussein was eager to prove his skills, hoping it would help him reclaim his old job. To revive the 50-year-old projector, he travels across the West Bank and even attempts to cross into Israel. But he doesn’t realize that his era has already faded.
