Cannes Film Festival has started in full force and Egypt is on the red carpet. The Egyptian Pavilion has officially opened its doors at the 79th Cannes Film Festival, welcoming filmmakers, producers, distributors, and industry professionals for a packed programme of panels, co-production talks, and cross-sector conversations shaping the region’s cinematic future.
This is where deals get discussed, collaborations take shape, and Arab cinema stakes its place in the global industry calendar.

@cairoscene LIVE: At the Egyptian Pavilion, a roundtable on the restoration and exhibition of Egyptian film classics brought together leading voices from across the region to ask what it takes to return these works to the screen and bring them to new audiences.
The conversation explored the ethics of restoration, the challenges of accessing and preserving archives, and the responsibility of protecting cinematic memory for future generations. Speakers reflected on the delicate balance between technology and human expertise, the politics of where Arab and African film heritage is held, and the importance of keeping classic cinema alive as part of a living cultural conversation.
The panel featured Hussein Fahmy, renowned actor and President of Cairo International Film Festival; Dr. Hany Aboulhassan, Advisor to the Chairman for International Cooperation at Egyptian Media Production City; Youssef Shazli, Co-Founder and Director of Zawya Cinema and Head of Distribution at Misr International Films; Dhia Jerbi, Tunisian producer and member of the Archive Circulation Initiative; and Abdelwahab Albakri, Co-Founder of Kalam Aflam.

One of the most interesting points discussed was the growing curiosity of younger audiences towards classic Egyptian films. Early filmmakers were still discovering the language of cinema itself, experimenting with compositions, camera angles, and storytelling techniques, which continues to make these restored works fascinating for new generations discovering the origins of the craft today. And that’s why we are continuing our initiative in restoration!✨🎞️

مهرجان القاهرة ينعي الفنان الكبير عبد الرحمن أبو زهرة
ينعى مهرجان القاهرة السينمائي الدولي ببالغ الحزن والأسى الفنان القدير عبد الرحمن أبو زهرة، الذي رحل عن عالمنا عن عمر ناهز 92 عامًا بعد معاناة مع المرض. ترك الراحل إرثًا فنيًّا قيّمًا سيبقى محفورًا في ذاكرة الجمهور العربي بفضل مسيرته الطويلة المليئة بالعمل الجاد.
وأعرب الفنان حسين فهمي، رئيس المهرجان، عن حزنه العميق لفقدان الراحل قائلًا: "نودع اليوم قيمة فنية وإنسانية كبيرة. تميز عبد الرحمن أبو زهرة طوال رحلته بالصدق والالتزام، وكان نموذجًا يُحتذى به في احترام الفن وتقدير الجمهور. أتقدم بصادق التعازي لنجله أحمد وللأسرة الكريمة بأكملها، راجيًا من الله أن يرزقهم الصبر والسكينة".
وتتقدم إدارة المهرجان وجميع العاملين فيه بخالص المواساة لأسرة الراحل وللأسرة الفنية، داعين المولى عز وجل أن يتغمده بواسع رحمته ومغفرته.

تكريم رئيس مهرجان القاهرة بجائزة شخصية العام السينمائية العربية
أعلن مركز السينما العربية منح الفنان حسين فهمي، رئيس مهرجان القاهرة السينمائي الدولي، جائزة "شخصية العام السينمائية العربية" في دورتها السابعة، تقديرًا لمسيرته الفنية وإسهاماته في المشهد السينمائي إقليميًّا ودوليًّا.
يتسلم رئيس المهرجان التكريم خلال حفل جوائز النقاد للأفلام العربية، المقرر إقامته يوم السبت 16 مايو، على هامش فعاليات مهرجان كان السينمائي.
يعكس الاختيار الدور المحوري الذي أداه الفنان حسين فهمي منذ عودته لرئاسة مهرجان القاهرة السينمائي في عام 2022، ومبادراته لدعم المواهب، والبدء في ترميم كلاسيكيات السينما، واستعادة حضور الجناح المصري في سوق الأفلام بمهرجان كان، وتوسيع أنشطة "أيام القاهرة لصناعة السينما".

Honoring President of Cairo International Film Festival with Arab Cinema Personality of the Year Award
Arab Cinema Center announced awarding artist Hussein Fahmy, President of Cairo International Film Festival, the "Arab Cinema Personality of the Year" award in its seventh edition, in recognition of his artistic career and contributions to the cinematic scene regionally and internationally.
Artist Hussein Fahmy is scheduled to receive this honor during the Critics' Awards for Arab Films ceremony, set to be held on Saturday, May 16, on the sidelines of the 79th Cannes Film Festival.
This selection reflects the pivotal role Hussein Fahmy has played since his return to the presidency of Cairo International Film Festival in 2022, along with his initiatives to support talents, initiate the restoration of Egyptian cinema classics, and restore the presence of the Egyptian Pavilion at Cannes Film Market. He contributed to expanding the activities of "Cairo Industry Days," and forging strategic partnerships with major institutions and festivals in China.
