Blending absurd comedy, love and politics, the film follows a ghost who returns — inhabiting a vacuum cleaner — to reunite with her husband while confronting unresolved memories and silenced voices.
In this conversation, the director reflects on what receiving this recognition for his first feature film means to him: a confirmation that his voice and creative vision are on the right path. After the festival, he plans to take some time to rest, recharge and find inspiration again through books and films before starting a new project. ✨

Een man wordt verliefd op z'n stofzuiger. Of nou ja, het is zijn overleden vrouw die bezit heeft genomen van het apparaat. In A Useful Ghost dient deze liefde – tussen man en stofzuiger – als een metafoor voor de queer-ervaring. Op het International Film Festival Rotterdam spreken we regisseur Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke over hoestende apparaten, de druk van queer personen om 'nuttig' te zijn en academic ladyboys.
''In Thailand hebben we veel legendes over relaties tussen mensen en niet-mensen. Mijn film is deels geïnspireerd op de legende van Mae Nak Phra Khanong, uit de 19e eeuw, over een vrouw die stierf tijdens de bevalling terwijl haar man vocht in de oorlog. Als hij terugkeert, weet hij niet dat ze dood is omdat ze als geest nog door het huis spookt. Ze blijft bij hem als huisvrouw. De gemeenschap pikt dat niet en uiteindelijk wordt de geest uit de samenleving verdreven.'
'Dat verhaal resoneert enorm met de ervaringen van de queer-gemeenschap. Twee individuen willen bij elkaar zijn, maar de samenleving vindt dat het niet mag. In Thailand is er bovendien het cliché dat ouders tegen hun kind dingen zeggen als: je mag alles zijn, homo, lesbiënne, zolang je maar een goed mens bent. Zolang je maar useful bent voor de maatschappij. Hetero kinderen hebben die last niet, die mogen bij wijze van spreken een dief worden. Als queer persoon moet je een prijs betalen voor acceptatie: je moet nuttig zijn – vandaar ook de titel A Useful Ghost.’
'Ik vond de combinatie academic ladyboy zo sterk omdat het twee uitersten verenigt die op het eerste gezicht onverenigbaar lijken: het intellectuele van de academie en de uitgesproken expressie van een ladyboy. Het personage heeft in de film bewust geen naam: de term zelf is memorabel genoeg om haar identiteit te vullen. Bovendien is het persoonlijk: ik identificeer mezelf ook als een academic ladyboy.’

In this genre-bending satire on love, politics and memory, a ghost returns to haunt a vacuum cleaner and prove her love for her living husband.
The FUTURE VOICE award recognizes bold new talent. This award honors a first or second feature that demonstrates outstanding creative vision and the potential to bring positive change to both cinema and society.
April 18–19, Thai director Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke @ratchapoomb joined us in Shanghai for the “Our Turn” workshop.
On Saturday, we hosted a talk at Premiere Cinemas, opening with his Locarno-winning short A Useful Ghost, followed by a conversation on his journey “from short films to features.” Our Turn director Qian Ning also joined the discussion. In the opening, moderator LIAN noted: “In Ratchapoom’s cinematic world, there’s a striking mix of imagination and humor—where grand historical ghosts and questions of identity are reassembled in unexpected ways.”
Last year, his feature A Useful Ghost won the Grand Prize at Cannes Critics’ Week. Framed as a “ghost story,” it unfolds as a sharp allegory on labor, desire, and social structures. Beyond discussing the feature, we also touched on his creative process, his understanding of genre cinema, and how he explores new forms of authorship beyond personal expression.
On Sunday, Ratchapoom joined workshop directors Zhao Dan, Zhang Yu, and Qian Ning for a creative session at SIGMA Shanghai (Columbia Circle), focusing on script development and project guidance.

:랏차품 분반차촉은 태국의 영화감독으로, 태국의 식민지 역사와 탈식민적 상황을 지속적으로 탐구한 작품 세계를 구축해 왔다. 이는 태국이 직접적으로 서구 열강의 식민지가 되지는 않았으나, 문화적/정치적 지배를 경험해 온 역사적 조건과 맞닿아 있다. 그의 첫 장편 <쓸모 있는 귀신>(2025)은 제 75회 칸 영화제 비평가 주간에 초청되어 그랑프리를 수상하며 국제적인 주목을 받았다. 이번 상영회에서는 프랑스의 영토 지배, 영국 제국의 유산, 미국 냉전 시기 등 태국 사회에 억압되어 온 기억을 장르적 쾌감으로 전환하는 그의 미학을 확인할 수 있는 ’식민주의 3부작‘ 단편을 소개한다.
