100 days to go. Somewhere in this shot is Nell (I think they have tall runners 😉) before or after a Saturday team Dana Farber run in Boston to get ready for the April 2024 marathon. I wanted to thank all the family and friends who have given generously to the goal of raising much needed funds for cancer research. Nell is running in memory or her uncle, Jerry Walther, who was treated for glioblastoma at Dana Farber in Boston in 2019-20. Jerry was smart, funny, kind, generous and a terrific husband, dad, son, brother, friend , hockey coach and party host. He made everyone feel like the most special person in the room. Any gathering was better when Jerry was there. His brand of mischief was legend. As Nell gets to the halfway point of fundraising I wanted to send special thanks to (in alphabetical order bc I’m a teacher) Maggie Blundi, Lisa Burney, Sky Caron, Moira Carroll, Mary Carugati, Barrie Clark, Bridget Clark, The D’Amico family; the DePietro family, Meredith DePietro, Maya Geller, the Mike Kennedy family, Julia Landwehr, Tony Manev, Rona Note, the Rizzotti Family, Beth Sadoff, the Salamone family, the Sharp family, Jennifer Walther, Kaethe Walther, the Warner family, Alan Webber, Judy Webber, Ross Webber, and two anonymous donors. I hope I got to everyone. We are very grateful for the support and love! Link in bio for her page. #runlikenell
Yesterday we honored our students who did research in and out of the classroom at the Celebration of Student Achievement. I saw so many great presentations. Cheers to two of my students who presented on environmental issues. Journalism major Loren Karp studied the life cycle of a T-shirt from Health and Environmental reporting and JPW minor Sarah Neil presented her field work tracking the bird population in and near campus. They both did amazing. This is a special day on campus.
“The Art of the Patch” workshop today with the amazing Julie Woodard @juiceboxworkshop was held in our gallery today. We used textile scraps to make patches. I first learned of Julie’s work from a fiber market at the @buildingbok in Philadelphia. She is such a talent and a great teacher. It aligned so well with the values of the Rachel Breen @rbbreen exhibit. I’ve loved working with these artists and seeing students learn about sustainability and art. #repurposewithpurpose
What a dream project to work on with my students and with Minneapolis artist @rbbreen who takes textiles destined for the landfill and makes them into art to protest and call attention to the human and environmental cost or the garment industry. Thank you to @mpezalla for introducing me to Rachel’s work and to @professorraya for her students animations that illustrate so well the exhibit narrative and to my journalism and environmental studies students for writing content and narrations. I got to include the implosion poster by @circularphl in the exhibit as well. Lots of great workshops are planned for this month. #sustainabilityeducation education #laborunions #campusasalivinglab
This Rachel Breen exhibition showcases the best of what a college art gallery can do. Bravo to Gallery Director @mpezalla and Journalism Prof @knwebber for building the show and the academic programming to go with it. Journalism students researched the garment industry's environmental and human health effects. IMM's @professorraya led her students to create accompanying animations that help tell the story. #collaboration #interdisciplinarity @jpwtcnj@tcnjcjf@tcnj_imm

I never got this photo developed bc I was embarrassed of my time. I hadn’t planned on spending time in the medical tent but I got fixed up and finished. Honestly, for the ten years I spent living in Manhattan, it was the most fun thing I did while living there. Seeing different parts of New York on a beautiful fall day was spectacular. The music, crowds. It’s amazing. My late brother and I did it together and he waited for me at the finish with my sister in law. Thank you to the spectators who carry runners through the five boroughs. Happy Marathon Day! Circa 1990.
Canceled flights, lost luggage and temps in the 80s didn’t deter @llenwebber from crossing the line at her second major marathon @berlinmarathon . She ran on a team of 15 from Boston for @danafarber . I’m proud of all the hours of training over the summer, sometimes in the dark doing laps at the local track or in our neighborhood. In two marathons, with very generous support from friends, family and coworkers she has raised close to $20k for important cancer research. Thank you to all who supported her in these two races. Also, I can’t comment on how the polar bear did but cheers to him, too.
Research day digging through the files of the International ladies garment workers union. Before unionizing, garment workers worked 6 days a week in hot and unsafe factories (sweatshops)for low pay. They’d leave a factory and bring extra work home. In Philadelphia workers went on strike in 1909 to protest conditions and wages. They followed the uprising of 20,000 in New York. In 1911 in nyc the triangle shirt wait fire killed 146 women, men and children after a fire broke out in the factory. After the factory owners were found not guilty protests broke out. An investigation led to reforms for better safety in garment factories.
