You know you want to see this new work up close! ☺️Join me tonight @mnmuseum for the opening of “What Holds and What Breaks” 6-8 pm, with my incredible McKnight cohort: @alisonhiltner@tinyocelot@rackleystudio@sophiachainyc@mignhad and in the words of the wise @alisonhiltner - I could not be in better company!!
Thanks so much to @melaniepankau and @hellokeishawilliams ; @mcknightfdn and @mnmuseum for making this possible.
Reverberations, works on paper made from thread removed from used clothing, references what is left behind in communities where our clothes are made.
Something new on the wall today, made from some old things. Repair = care and solidarity means we are bound to one another. Fight the power. #protestbanner #garmentsolidarity #textileinstallation #solidaritybanner #reusereducerecycle♻️
Today is the 115th anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, which killed 146 garment workers in New York City in 1911. Shroud honors their memory and the lives of the 1,134 garment workers who died in the Rana Plaza Factory Collapse 13 years ago. Garment workers have been exploited across time and across geographic borders. All workers deserve safe places to work today. The work for justice for garment workers continues today. From “The Labor We Wear” installed at @artsmia in 2020!

What a dream project to work on with my students and with Minneapolis artist @rbbreen who takes textiles destined for the landfill and makes them into art to protest and call attention to the human and environmental cost or the garment industry. Thank you to @mpezalla for introducing me to Rachel’s work and to @professorraya for her students animations that illustrate so well the exhibit narrative and to my journalism and environmental studies students for writing content and narrations. I got to include the implosion poster by @circularphl in the exhibit as well. Lots of great workshops are planned for this month. #sustainabilityeducation education #laborunions #campusasalivinglab
It was so interesting to hear about Rachel Breen's creative process, including research at Cornell archives on labor relations, and interviews and observations in Bangladeshi factories. Workers have historically paid a very high price for the clothes we wear. @rbbreen@kheelcenter@tcnjartgallery
I’m running out of room for this work in progress. The work wants to take over as there is so much to say and so much to protest. Thankful for the way my community is stepping up to resist and protect —thank you! Grateful for time in my studio and for the workers who made this fabric, dyed these bright colors and sewed these clothes - as I turn them into symbols of our power when we join together. Wishing everyone regenerative spirit as we keep going. ❤️
