Horseman, (moving through time and space).
25 x40cm
Acrylic and ink on canvas, paper, paper bag and card, held by threads, paper clips, dress making pins, string and PVA glue.
2026
As well as co-curating THE FIRST ROUND PROPER, the SECOND HALF with Stephen Carley and Sean Williams, I will be showing a recent work, Horseman, from a current series of works which plays around the edges of painting and drawing as part of a continuing investigation into the nature and construction of memory, aging, and abstraction.
A collaged assemblage that incorporates old work, cut up and reassembled, to form a fresh perspective on old material. Domestic and everyday material; card, paper bag, threads, paper clips and dress pins hold it all together. Bit and bobs of things that I've collected or acquired over the years, from different decades and roles across my life to date; little references to aspects and times in my life that can feel disparate but form in some ways a whole, of sorts.
It's attached to the wall via a string wound around a screw and feels both fixed and temporary. In the picture it's tensioned between two screws, but for this exhibition it incorporates a fishing float as part of it's hanging method. The black line of the string now pushes into the white walls around it, playing with how much space it takes up, or claims its own.
