I was selected for a crit at Materiality: Edition 1, alongside these wonderful people. I came away with a full heart and fizzing from the energy in the room. Posted @withregram • @noplaceart | Group Crit It was a beautiful revealing of practice, and self between us, sharing background to our work, questions, doubts and experiences is always affirming and uplifting. Thank you to all the artists, guest judges, @matthewburrowsstudio , @c.g.rush , everyone @noplaceart , and of course @rowansiddons who dreamed this dream and made it happen. There were also open conversations about the need to change the model of how we all view, experience and engage with art, as both artists and viewers. No finner examples of which are @artistsupportpledge from Matthew Burrows, @starvingartistsopportunities from Conor Rush and No Place Art and their mission for Materiality "to create a place where artists can meet, to discuss their work, to receive feedback, references and more." It reminded me that art is powerful, not just valuable. The space to think, express, imagine, innovate, connect and create change. That desire and drive was embodied in all our conversations, to change perceptions, connect us to our land, each other, share joy, grief, love, and to make showing and seeing art more egalitian. Orchard Square, Sheffield S1 April 1st – 16th, opening times Tues-Sat 11-3pm A group exhibition of small contemporary paintings, curated by Sean Williams (@swseanwillaims ) of @prosaic97 and Kate Jacob (@k8jacob1 .) Contrafibularities, the word, came from a 1987 episode of Blackadder, where Samuel Johnson boasts about the newly completed dictionary of every word in the English language, Blackadder wishes him his ‘most enthusiastic contrafibulations’. A word that came into existence because it could, a fitting title for this collection of work that was conjured up into being by this stellar group of artists. A show of contemporary painting from a range of regional, national and international artists. Themes cover identity, abstraction, realism, urban and rural idylls, found materials constructed into paint, allegories, storytelling and fantasy. The combining factor? A love and understanding of paint, picture telling and a passion and commitment to practice. Lost in Matter, (acrylic on canvas, 30x30cm) is part of a new body of work where paint is washed and layered in thin translucent layers, built upon, wiped away, repeated; glossed over and highlighted to create a space that remind us of something familiar and yet unplaceable. Lost in matter is a small piece that imagines the vast space of memory and matter. The collecting of memory and the shifting patterns it takes over time, as it find new shapes and forms, not quite as it happened, perhaps some details are added or embellished and maybe some are removed, lost or wiped clean. #turpspainters #turpscc2019 #turpscc2021 #turpscc2122

Drawing as action, as performance, as choreography. I am delighted to have “Familiar Territory” accepted into @prosaic97 second show entitled “Further Speculation” which follows on from “Speculative Proposals” which I so enjoyed being in last month. Sheffield is indeed becoming “familiar territory” for me! This show begins at Bloc Studios on Monday 20th straight after the last one comes down. These small micro shows exhibit a range of different artists’ work in an attempt to explore points of difference as talented artist and perceptive curator @swseanwilliams puts it. It has been a hugely rewarding experience to engage with these talented Sheffield based artists. Again my point of interest is where a drawing becomes a painting or a drawing is regarded as a painting and whether there is indeed any distinction worth making and if so on what basis: is it in terms of the materials used? The extent (coverage?!) of mark making? The intention of the artist? The process employed? Are paintings more valuable than drawings and if so why? Do our responses not reveal more about us than the artwork itself? Isn’t painting an extension of mark making and drawing but an illustration of one form of mark making - a minimalist form of painting arguably - perhaps we should instead focus on the idea of mark making and draw no valued judgements between painting and drawing. How we view these things and the judgments we make seem arbitrary and highly speculative. It is this that lies in part behind the thought process of this small work (as in many others).
