Indebted to @rutheheaton for the curation and organisation and images and @k8jacob1 & @mikkmurray for the curation and install. Simulcast 3
Simulcast 3 is the third iteration of a series of contemporary group art exhibitions that started its journey in Sheffield in June 2025. Organised by Huddersfield based artist Ruth Heaton they bring together a group of studio based artists whose practice within it reflects the process of painting, drawing, expanded practice, and installation. There is no overarching thematic anchor point in the exhibitions. The title serves to reflect the diverse and eclectic nature of the work, with the curation process intending to find, and display, emerging relationships and interactions.

Into the (winter) woods #1 - January '26
Watercolour on paper, 38 x 28cm (plus detail)
Moments of magic of rusting copper ferns that extol their beauty in the process of renewal; their copperiness acting as a luminosity amongst the deeper darker ‘heart of darkness’,* that is the beauty of the winter woods. The act of making is a continuation of imposing a structure, an insistence on sameness to allow for difference. Also recognising that in this process the importance of treading lightly; across the surface of the dimpled watercolour paper surface and the recomposing wooded paths.
*I have just finished reading God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy @Arundhati Roy, such a beautiful, prosaic and impactful book.

A strange Saturday in Sheffield.
Penny McCarthy’s, ‘How to look through time’ at Graves Gallery, my 3rd visit is dreamy, ponderous and magical. Time travel through drawing.
Kedisha Coakley’s ‘On the border of my peaceful home’, is a beautifully curated exhibition of a journey through artworks, both her own and from the Sheffield Museum’s. Stunning.
And then ‘New Horizons’, a show case of new acquisitions by Sheffield art gallery is curated with great sensitivity creating fascinating connections. ‘Glossy’ by Matt Calderwood, light and dark, playful and poignant.
And then ‘Slime Mother’ at Site Gallery. Out there and other worldly.
Such great cultural offerings in Sheffield.
And then there was the UKIP March. Totally bizarre, and incomprehensible. A strange Saturday in Sheffield.

‘Point-to-point’ #12, 35 x 30cm, acrylic on canvas.
One of a series of paintings led by the interior of the space, overlay, a playful mathematics along with painterly intuition.

Suns up in the studio. Work before work. Revisiting work. Thinking of Leslie Wayne’s comment of her work being like siblings. @wayneporcaro #abstractpainting #nonfigurativepainting
Today the @shufineart team got to meet our fantastic first year @sheffhallamuni Fine Art students. It was great to introduce everyone to our lovely studios. We ended the morning getting to know each other as we played with clay, all inspired by a comment from artist @jackkytan 🙏 We’re so enjoying having the studios filled with making, conversation and laughter again. It’s going to be a good year ahead! #art #contemporaryart #artstudent #fineart #sheffieldart #sheffieldcreativeindustriesinstitute
