I've gone and done a thing! I'm stoked to share that I've entered Sky Arts Landscape Artist Of The Year 2026 @artistoftheyear .
Filmed in the astonishing beauty of the Lake District near Keswick, Cumbria, (I mean, look at the photo), it was more than just gorgeous weather and lovely people. Moments like these remind me why I create art.
Catch the results early next year, January & February 2026, on Sky Arts.
The host: Stephen Mangan @realstephenmangan
The judges: Eva Langret @evalangret Tai Shan Schierenberg @taishanschierenberg Kathleen Soriano @kathleen.soriano
Just a little note: while Iโm happy to share this moment, I must keep details about the artworks, placings, and filming specifics under wraps. No subtle nudges in the comments or dm's, thanks.
A huge thank you to Farrah, Nic, and the entire team at Storyvault Films @storyvaultfilms for their care, communication and help, making sense of what was a long, yet incredibly memorable and fun day.

I've been going through my work today collating a collection of images of my painting over the past few years (in no particular order). I'm sharing here as they may be of interest as a reminder of sorts to everyone.
I'm aiming to ramp things up as it looks like I've got my long covid beat and my energy is back ...at last. I have a lot of work to do.

[swipe left/ right] โHey, itโs Andy hereโ (this phrase haunts me). I'm putting all my process/technique videos from a few years back into one place again . There are 9 videos in total, each detailing a different layer of my painting process. Iโm sharing them again because I was reminded of how valuable they are as a resource and thought, "Hey, why not?".
Hmm, maybe itโs time to create a new set? ๐ค Probably, but that will have to wait as I need to focus on an upcoming show.
Coming next month to ๐๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฐ, โ๐ ๐ง๐ถ๐บ๐ฒ ๐ข๐ณ ๐ฆ๐๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐โ - a solo exhibition of my paintings, reflecting on the past four years and my responses to the Sheffield cityscape.

Title : Roundabout
Medium : Acrylics on photo mount
Andy has been mapping Sheffield in paint since 2009, tracing the city from the charged stillness of twilight to the deep tones of night. Best known for his atmospheric nocturne cityscapes, his work is held in the permanent collection of Museums Sheffield at Weston Park Museum and is privately collected in the UK and beyond. Born in Bristol and raised in Blackpool, he studied painting at Sheffield Hallam University in the 1990s and has remained rooted in the city ever since. His practice is shaped by kenopsia, the eerie, hyperโempty atmosphere of places usually alive with people, and by the uncanny shift into night when the familiar becomes unfamiliar. Over more than a decade and a half, Andy has developed a realist approach that resists photographic exactness, reconstructing fleeting moments into textured, resonant images. His works form a portrait of Sheffield across time, light, and memory.

An expansion on my plein air painting. I'm pleased with what's emerged. I'm genuinely tempted to do this on a much larger canvas... what do you think?
You can see my smaller 'Roundabout', 2026 sketch at โBee Sting Cakeโ @theshopsheffield a new gallery and studio space run by @njgrindrod .

It's done, here's the finished painting.
I'll be sharing more information about this in the next few days. Hope you enjoyed seeing this progress. If you've not seen all the progress images check out my profile page.
The second of the oil colour layers. All the volumes and sections are now defined. Colours have been placed. The feeling of space, movement and distance behind the trees is really coming through.
The final layer is to come, where I'll be developing the forms, texture and details. Cleaning up edges and adding the 'pings' to all the highlights. The sky needs more modelling and darkening, same with the tarmac.... but, all in all, this is working great.
What do you think?
Here's the first of the oil paint layers (all the previous layers have been in acrylic). Using the structure of the underpainting I develop darker areas and introduce actual colour. The green from the wash (layer 3) is still coming through strong, but I'm able to add shadows and highlights.
What do you think?
I'm really enjoying painting this, hope you're enjoying watching it come together too.
I'm pleased with the progress of this one and really enjoying painting it, hope that comes through. If you saw my small painting study from the '7 Night, 7 Paintings' experiment it probably is making sense now. Think I should be able to get the first of the oil colour layers finished today. I'm looking forward to what I come out with.
