// BETH CHATTO // Beth Chatto Gardens in the late afternoon Autumn sun. The Beth Chatto Gardens, located in Elmstead Market, Essex, are an internationally renowned ecological garden and nursery known for pioneering the concept of “the right plant for the right place”. Created by plantswoman Beth Chatto beginning in 1960, the gardens were developed from a neglected and challenging piece of land featuring contrasting dry, gravelly soil and wet, boggy areas. @bethchattogardens @nationalgardenscheme @essexngs Photographer : @garymorrisroe / @agardenportrait #garden #gardening #gardendesign #nature #design #planting #horticulture #photography #gardenphotography #portrait #naturephotography #autmn #tree #bethchattogardens #bethchatto #ngs #nationalgardenscheme #essex

Contemporary Tsuboniwa Retreat — Calm, Seasonal, Serene 🌿 Designed in response to a brief for a Japanese-inspired garden, this space balances structure and softness to create a deeply calming atmosphere. A flowering cherry anchors the space, supported by two Amelanchier lamarckii and two Osmanthus burkwoodii, bringing layered seasonal interest and delicate shifts in light and texture. Four water bowls, three within the garden and one in the courtyard, introduce a quiet rhythm of sound and reflection. Limestone stackers define edges and transitions, complementing the slate ground plane and reinforcing a sense of restraint and clarity. Understated lighting with discreet uplights beneath the trees extends the experience into the evening, revealing form and shadow with subtle drama. A compact urban space, shaped into a place of pause. 📸🌿 @garymorrisroe ✏️🏡 @upstairs_architects 👷🌿 @shootsandleaveslondon 🌿🌿 @leongardens #GardenDesign #JapaneseGarden #EastLondon #LandscapeArchitecture #UrbanSanctuary

// BENINGTON LORDSHIP GARDENS // An early spring morning at @beningtonlordshipgardens in Hertfordshire. The gardens are now open every Tuesday and also have opened their gates for the @nationalgardenscheme since 1927 helping to raise money for charity. I am looking forward to revisiting throughout the year to capture the seasonal changes the garden has to offer. The historic estate features a 18th century manor house, early century gardens, and a 12th century Norman castle ruin, built by Roger de Valoignes around 1141. They also have a “neo-Norman” folly built in the 1830s. So lots to explore! #garden #design #nature #art

In a moody atmosphere, one of our gardens in Surrey awakens at the end of a very cold winter. With Spring only a week away, scented Sarcococca and Daphne infuse the air with their sweet fragrance. A new cycle full of opportunities lies ahead, let’s treasure them. 🥳🌿 📸🌿 @garymorrisroe 👷🏻‍♂️🌿 @shootsandleaveslondon 🌿🌿 @leongardens #gardens #surrey #gardendesign #plants

The sharp cold of the last few weeks brought truly wintry scenes to Church Barn, Essex (UK). ❄️ Even though less colourful than in other seasons, these images clearly show the three structural layers we always talk about in our garden masterclasses: 1 — The clipped layer 🍃 Clipped Prunus lusitanica runs parallel to the building, echoing the linearity of the black timber cladding. It is strongest closest to the house — the manmade element — then gradually feathers out towards the surrounding landscape. 2 — The ephemeral layer 🌾 Repeated lines of Calamagrostis × acutiflora ‘Karl Foerster’ also follow the house. Through winter, stems and seed heads slowly lose density, becoming a lighter veil — yet still standing. Soon it will be cut back and disappear in a blink, only to surge again in early spring. Structure doesn’t need to be static: it can expand and contract with the seasons. 3 — The functional layer 🪵 The log piles. Laid in linear arrangements of varying heights, they play multiple roles: structural, ecological, water retention (especially if partially buried), and practical — a place to rest cut branches and trunks during winter work. From mid to late February we will cut everything back and spread the material as mulch, keeping that pool of biodiversity protected and active. There are different ways to transition from winter to spring — burning, removing cuttings completely — but in my view a quick cut-back (shears or a strimmer) keeps labour hours low while minimising impact on garden life. As temperatures rise, I’m planning to sow foxgloves, Lunaria, Tragopogon, Nigella, Californian poppies, and a few others. Cut-back time is also the moment to observe the ground layer and spot opportunities — empty pockets where spring light will reach before new growth wakes up again. We need structural complexity, and tight planting schemes where competition creates beauty and ecological value. 🐞🐛🕷️🪲🐜 What’s the first task you’ll do as warmer days arrive? 📸 @garymorrisroe 🌿 @leongardens 👷🏻‍♂️ @shootsandleaveslondon #stefanomarinaz #gardendesign #landscapedesign #wintergarden #naturalisticplanting

// HANNA TATSCHL // Theatre and TV writer Hanna Tatshl. I loved this shoot with Hanna. After a pre shoot call we decided that we would take the shoot out into the forest by my house. So one beautifully sunny morning we did just that and then we walked, talked, took photographs and talked so more. #portrait #portraitphotography #blackandwhite #edit

// Field Flowers // I like my job a lot but it’s made even better when you can photograph friends. Cate and I have discussed photographing her cut flower farm for a long time but last summer we finally made it happen. Cate’s @fieldflowershaslemere is a sustainable and seasonal cut flower farm and it’s only being on site that you really understand that this is not a job it’s a lifestyle and it’s hard bloody work. Cate sows the seeds, nurtures the flowers and when it’s time she heads out at the break of dawn to harvest. Then it’s to the barn to prepare and create pretty spectacular and beautiful bouquets for her clients. #garden #flowers #design #portrait #editorial
