2024 Creative Revolutionaries! We are excited to be acknowledged by CODAworx public art network CEO Toni Sikes. Nataly Gattegno & Jason Kelly Johnson / Futureforms pictured in front of their Orbital public art at the Uber / OpenAI HQ in San Francisco. “For the fifth year, CODAworx has gathered together a list of 25 fearless leaders of this artistic-activist revolution to shine a spotlight on their efforts – which reflect so well on this entire industry of public art professionals. The list of Creative Revolutionaries includes the artist magicians whose diverse works serve as mirrors of our world. It also includes the pioneering commissioners who push the envelope to support artwork that facilitates empathy and engagement. It is our distinct honor to bring together the leading rabble-rousers who are truly our heroes. They provide us with the vision, connections, strategy, and effective practices to influence change, and give us all a renewed sense of purpose. The following definitions are from Oxford Languages: cre·a·tive — relating to or involving the imagination or original ideas, especially in the production of an artistic work. — (of a person) having good imagination or original ideas. rev·o·lu·tion·ar·y — involving or causing a complete or dramatic change.” Feb 2024 @codaworx #publicart @uber @openai @chase_center #missionbay #jasonandnataly #jasonkellyjohnson #natalygattegno

Sunlight passing through Orbital’s oculus. On a sunny day stop by around noon to see the play of light on the colored anodized inner shingles. Light bounces around the vertical space generating unexpected forms of iridescence. #futureforms #futureformslab #jasonkellyjohnson #Shoggoth #oculus #iridescence #publicart #pantheon #missionbaysf #missionbay #dogpatchsf #sanfrancisco #chasecentersf #uberhq

Excited to share our work today with AIA Silicon Valley conference at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, CA! @aiasiliconvalley Jason’s talk will explore the intersections of art, architecture and technology. Pictured here > The San Jose Levitt Pavilion, located in the heart of Silicon Valley, was designed by the San Francisco based studio Futureforms / Jason Kelly Johnson and Nataly Gattegno with @cmgsite @arupamericas @pageturnbull The pavilion will provide an extraordinary venue for outdoor music and performance. The generous “community stage” will accommodate many performance types from operas, symphonies, and large bands to solo musicians. The adjacent lawn creates a flexible space for visitors to spread out a blanket and sit directly in front of the performers to enjoy the show or stroll along the edges under the canopy wings. “This would be a great reason to come downtown and spend some time,” San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan said. “I think that it has the potential to really add to the entire urban fabric of our city and have a transformational impact.” #urbanpark #levittpavillon #freelivemusic #jasonkellyjohnson #natalygattegno - Support free music for San Jose by following @levittsanjose

Progress! Exciting to see Stretto’s first few structural trusses suspended on their respective tree columns, as it begins to curvaceously flirt with OCVIBE’s new concert hall! Big week ahead! Amazing work Matt Construction and Washington Iron 🙏 Stretto by @futureformslab #jasonkellyjohnson #natalygattegno coming soon to OCVIBE in Anaheim, CA!

Shadow play! Kimsey Grove opening last week in Scottsdale, Arizona! Thank you to everyone that came out including Mayor Lisa Borowsky. @oldtownscottsdale Impressive work by our client @pegcompanies @genslerphoenix with Douglas Sydnor, @curatorengine and of course our studio & shop team at Futureforms in San Francisco, and amazing local installer @azartsolutions This permanent public artwork is located in Old Town on N Craftsman Court outside a new AC Hotel. Special thanks to innovation engineering team @endrestudio The piece was designed and fabricated in 2021 / 2022 during pandemic times, and has been in storage for 3yrs now. The Kimsey Grove creates a dramatic backdrop for pedestrians to gather, sit and view the play of light, shadow, and reflectivity from many vantage points. The artwork’s faceted skin is meant to inspire interactions and playfulness by both adults and children who might enjoy spending time underneath the artwork’s kaleidoscopic skin. The artwork is supported by four vaults to create an open and varied space for people to experience during the day and night. Artwork by Futureforms (Studio of Jason Kelly Johnson & Nataly Gattegno). #jasonkellyjohnson #natalygattegno #publicart #scottsdalepublicart Note: the first street scape image in this deck was edited to conceal some of the construction across the street, and remove a very poorly sited streetpole!!

Exciting work this semester in my Robotic Timber Pavilions studio at CCA! Thank you to all of our amazing students, faculty, staff and guest reviewers for making Saturday so intellectually engaging and enjoyable. The Robotic Timber Pavilions (RTP) studio reframes how non-standard timber structures are conceived and assembled, extending additive digital fabrication into full-scale architectural production. In this context, arches and shell systems operate as primary testbeds, capitalizing on their geometric clarity and structural efficiency to advance robotic assembly strategies. Using robotic platforms that grip, orient, and accurately place components according to precise digital models, RTP fuses computational design with semi-autonomous construction workflows, where human collaborators play an essential role in gluing, stapling, and completing the final assembly. The result is a parametric family of expressive forms that align spatial and aesthetic ambitions with structural performance, optimizing material through locally differentiated aggregation. Shifting away from the making of discrete parts, RTP emphasizes the spatial orchestration of generic timber elements (Off-the-shelf 2”x2”x1’ SPF lumber), where curvature, continuity, and surface behavior drive new directions in automated timber construction. This studio, led by Digital Craft Lab @cca.digital.craft.lab co-founder Prof. Jason Kelly Johnson showcases a series of experimental projects developed with California College of the Arts architecture students. The studio was supported by robotics expert Tyson Phillips @tysonkphillips and structural engineer Felix Weber (RDH Building Science) @rdhbuildingscience Guests included: @ilaberman @thejkhc @timhp @drawing_rome @i_archstudio @herzogdemeuron #ecemsaricayir @ferjii @berkeleyjones @kingby819 @ahakhovich @ax.scho @alirezborhani @michael.shiloh @keithkrumwiede @cca_arch_div

Infinity made imaginable! Incredible new photographs of our Continuum sculpture in Sunnyvale - Artist: Jason Kelly Johnson & Nataly Gattegno / Futureforms. Thank you to everyone that helped support and contribute to this project. We are incredibly grateful to our studio and shop team. This project epitomizes the term “digital craft” where computational design and fabrication wizardry, dovetail with human intuition, ingenuity and good old working on a team with your ✋ and 🧠 and ♥️. Massive STRETTO chunks!!! Exciting to see our sculpture’s space frame trusses being assembled and welded at Washington Iron in LA / Gardena. Super impressive work! The curvaceous steel structure is suspended by three tree-like column clusters / 9 columns, allowing for 30’ cantilevers on the ends of the sculpture. 🙏 These chunks will be primed and painted, then brought to Anaheim on 14 tractor trailers to be erected, field welded and scanned. Next comes the sub-structure and stainless steel skins! Deep respect for the team that is helping us bring this idea to life for OCVIBE @ocvibe The initial planning, design and engineering team, then of course the drafting team, the shop planning team, the forepeople, the surveyors, the fabricators, welders and riggers … and soon the installation team. I know I’m leaving some folks out! Thank you!! Our offices and shop facility are now located on over six acres in the city of Carson/Gardena, California #jasonkellyjohnson #natalygattegno #futureforms #publicart #futureformslab
