Over the past 25 years, CMG has grown and evolved, but several things have remained constant: our commitment to each other, our community, and the health of the planet. We have always been driven by a diverse collective of professionals united by our mission, creative energy, and commitment to transformative design.
We are proud and excited to announce that we have completed our transition to an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT), ensuring the long-term stewardship of the practice and the values that guide it.
Just as we design for the evolution of landscapes, we’ve designed a framework for the future of CMG. Read more about CMG’s new governance structure and what the future holds for our clients and partners through the link in our bio!
Cityside Park's open and restrained design orients visitors to the exceptional views of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge, and invites visitors to connect with the ecological and experiential qualities of the Bay.
Our goal as designers was to do less, to embrace the drama of the setting with a clear and elegant design that reveals the ever shifting, fog, light, wind, and waves that make Treasure Island so special. When complete, the park will include a total of 24 acres set within three additional rooms that will include a diversity of activities and experiences.

The Oakland-Alameda Adaptation Projects (OAAC ADAPT) are a first-of-its-kind, multi-jurisdictional adaptation planning, community engagement, and design process to adapt the shoreline communities of Oakland and Alameda to the effects of climate change.
CMG leads a team to formulate a Subregional Adaptation Plan that will serve as a framework for long-term planning, while simultaneously developing the adaptation design for two neighborhoods within the subregion that are particularly vulnerable to near-term coastal and inland flooding: the Oakland-Alameda Estuary and the northern shoreline of Bay Farm Island.
As we plan and design for the challenges of climate change, there are a multitude of opportunities to strengthen our communities far into the future through expansive visions for high-quality public space and access, nature-based solutions, ecological improvements, and the governance, financing, policies, that will be required to act on the vision.

CMG is working with the City of Santa Cruz to lead a multidisciplinary team on the Jessie Street Marsh Wetland Enhancement and Trail Project.
The design will expand and restore nearly one acre of wetland habitat, improve flood management, and create new public access through an ADA-accessible interpretive trail. By enhancing habitat value, removing contaminated soils, improving drainage, and providing a welcoming space for the community, this effort will transform Jessie Street Marsh into a healthier and more resilient landscape for people and wildlife.
This is one of four projects CMG is currently working on with the City of Santa Cruz. Learn more at the link in our bio!

Highlights from our annual CMG Retreat — exploring the Filoli Historic House + Garden and visiting the recently-completed first phase of Flood Park!
The Flood Park project team led us through the site, showing off the new multi-use sports fields, sports courts, walking paths, grilling and picnic areas, and their skills on the pump track. Construction of Phase 2 of the park is scheduled to wrap up this Spring!
We value this time together — sharing reflections on community, connection, creativity, art, challenges, change, and growth.
We couldn’t possibly measure the brain power 🧠 or count the number of meetings 🗓️, calls 📞, and hours ⏰ of work put into it, but after a solid several years of work, we’ve reached completion of the schematic designs. Huge thanks to everyone involved and WOOHOO! 🎉
The resulting, whopping 104-page document includes plans for civil engineering, landscape, paving and materials, grading, tree planting, irrigation, environmental restoration, architecture and so much more! The basis for the City’s Site Plan & Architectural Review (SPAR) approval process, and our environmental permitting, it’s a critical milestone in turning vision into action. 👀➡️💪🏼
👂Stay tuned as we keep you posted on that exciting process!

Cityside Park is a signature part of the 300 acres of parks and open space CMG has envisioned for Treasure Island. The waterfront park spans the western edge of the island, serving as a neighborhood amenity for residents, as well as a regional destination for San Francisco and the larger Bay Area community.
The 6-acre first phase of the park opened in September and connects the neighborhood with the Treasure Island Ferry Terminal, the gateway to Treasure Island from San Francisco. This southern entry point welcomes visitors with a coastal strand garden – filled with meandering paths, native coastal bluff species, and furnishings salvaged from trees from Yerba Buena Island. The Great Lawn provides a central gathering and event space anchored by the “Canopy of Sky," an ethereal art installation by Ned Khan that reveals and amplifies wind, light, and sky.
When complete, the park will include a total of 24 acres set within three additional rooms that will include a diversity of activities and experiences. Learn more about Cityside Park at the link in our bio!

Positioned at the historic heart of campus, the Computing and Data Science Building (CoDa) is designed to promote collaboration and innovation. A series of social spaces encourage people to gather and linger, while allowing for the heavy pedestrian and bicycle circulation of a campus environment.
CoDa carefully integrates several large heritage trees that anchor the site and connect the design to the historic oak groves that are iconic to the Stanford landscape. The landscape weaves connections between new and existing buildings through and around native oak trees. Garden courtyards and seating nooks provide a variety of experiences and functional environments for the building’s visitors, students, and faculty.
The new addition to the Stanford campus contributes to the continued active pedestrian corridor across the university. The project introduces a new kind of academic open space — an interdisciplinary hub for computation and data research at a prominent and important social site on campus.

Coyote Point Vision Plan creates a framework for a regional destination for current and future generations. Developed in collaboration with San Mateo County staff and public input, CMG undertook an in-depth analysis to understand the existing social, physical and natural resources of the park, developing a basis for a revamped park with enhanced organization and programming.
The Vision Plan creates a clearer identity for visitors, revenue opportunities with new experiences and a more ecologically resilience future through strategy around sea level rise challenges. It also provides an operationally feasible array of programming and improvements that can serve the immediate community and region through identifying existing and potential uses becoming of each zone’s character.

The latest phase of the Gateway of Pacific campus (GOP 5) in South San Francisco adds to the robust amenities on campus with the introduction of a multi-use sports court and sculpture garden. The site design takes advantage of the synergy between indoor and outdoor spaces and connects to the lower campus with a series of terracing stone seating elements and grand stairway.
In total, 610 tons of Indiana Limestone were installed at GOP 5 to create a series of unique and dynamic social spaces. The design reinforces CMG’s vision to create outdoor spaces that are idiosyncratic but collectively work together to connect people with each other and with nature.

The Oakland Alameda Adaptation Committee (OAAC) hosted a Sea Level Rise Planning Fair to explore shoreline adaptation concepts! Over 150 community members came together at @reapclimatecenter to share their ideas, concerns, and hopes for the future of the waterfront as part of developing an Alameda Shoreline Adaptation Plan 🌊🦪
This event was an important step in Alameda's adaptation process. OAAC is committed to continuing conversations about local and subregional shoreline adaptation - building the foundation for community collaboration and working toward positive change.
