Debuted at Burning Man in 2022, “Atabey’s Treasure” now proudly sits along the Big Art Loop in San Francisco🐟 This sculpture was created by Puerto Rican artist NiNo to bring attention to the environmental challenges facing his home island. Made with an internal steel frame and repurposed metal, such as silver pizza trays, "Atabey's Treasure" is “the ancestral mother of the Taino Indigenous people of Puerto Rico,” who was “worshiped as a goddess of fresh water and who represents the Earth Spirit.” Artist & Art:@leaveittonino @readytoplayart @atabeystreasure Partners: @bigartloop @sf_port @building180 Location: Port of San Francisco at Brannan St. Wharf Photo Credits: @iromo_ #NiNoArt #SteelArt #RepurposedArt #BigArtLoop #Building180 #AtabeysTreasure #BigArtLoopPortside #SFPort

“Echoes - a voice from uncharted waters” by Mathias Gmachl is a life-sized steel sculpture of a one-year-old blue whale.🐋 This installation is both in honor of one of Earth’s largest, most beloved mammals, and a plea for awareness and change. If you get too close to the whale calf, an alarm will sound, serving as a critical allusion to our impact on the natural world. From the artist: "With Echoes - a voice from uncharted waters, I want to provide an open space - a platform - for the public to have conversations about the future of our planet. Not just about whales, but of all life that exists. The need to create room to learn, and dream, of a better future feels more pressing than ever. The installation is my small contribution towards a larger shift in the narratives and actions needed." Introducing "Coralee"! A beautiful mermaid sculpture along the Big Art Loop that's composed of recycled glass and mixed metals🧜‍♀️ Originally created at the Chatsworth House, England, the local school children participated in the creation of her glass scales and the mosaic pool she lays in. Glass bottles were collected, cleaned, tumbled and fused together. This fantastical Big Art Loop sculpture, “Dr. Fisherian’s Runaway Machine” by Chris Wollard, combines industrial design with each passerby’s imagination!🤖 The mysterious robot in mid-stride invites viewers to imagine their own stories about where its coming from and going. The legs are constructed of repurposed oilfield pipes and the body is made of light weight steel tubing and skinned with aluminum cladding. Fun fact: this sculpture is self-standing -- it's not mechanically connected to the base! Organic and otherworldly, “Bloom” by Michael Christian complements its natural surroundings while also standing as a bold visual landmark. From the artist – “I’m thrilled to see Bloom and Corpus find a home along San Francisco’s waterfront. Both of these pieces were created for festival and desert environments... To now see them installed in such a public, everyday setting is a gift. I hope people walking along the Port pause, look up..., and to wonder a little bit more about the world around them.” Art & Artist: @michaelchristianart Partners: @bigartloop @sf_port @building180 Location: Port of San Francisco at Heron’s Head Park Photo Credits: @iromo_ #Building180 #MichaelChristianArt #SteelArt #PublicArt #BigArtLoop

Our next Big Art Loop feature is Bryan Tedrick’s “Steelhead”, which transformed something tragic into something beautiful! The four primary beams of this structure were salvaged from the remains of Soda Rock Winery in Healdsburg, CA, which tragically burned down in 2019. Inspired by the river where the winery was located, this fish sculpture was created to honor the native steelhead that inhabit the area. “Nature’s Helpers” by Gregory Fields was one of the winners of the Rbhu Gives Back grants in 2024, and now welcomes visitors at the two entrances of Tailwinds Park with beautiful mosaics of local plants and animals🦋 The project features two 8-foot-tall steel pillars and three 4-foot-tall steel sculptures, each inlaid with glazed ceramic panels. The panels showcase intricate designs of native plants, birds, and reptiles, celebrating the richness and diversity of the local ecosystem. “A Legacy of Light”, created by LMNL Studio and commissioned by Destination Cleveland, honors Charles F. Brush and Cleveland’s pioneering role in electric street lighting, as well as the donors behind the Illuminate CLE initiative💡 In 1879, Brush unveiled the world’s first public demonstration of electric street lighting. Inspired by his original design, this bronze monument reinterprets the historic fixture as a contemporary public artwork, incorporating acrylic diffusers, an internal LED system, and an engraved glass plaque. Installed across from one of the original lamps, the piece glows nightly as a symbol of Cleveland’s ongoing energy, innovation, and civic pride. @lmnlstudio In partnership with: @thisiscle & @onehatonehand 📸: @vividcle #Cleveland #IlluminateCLE #LMNLStudio #ThisIsCleveland #DowntownCleveland #PublicArt #ContemporaryArt #UrbanDesign #LightingDesign #ClevelandHistory
