Happy to share the display table we designed and fabricated for the tranSTUDIO booth at @icff_official in New York! With just a few days to make it happen, the process moved fast — from a sketch on Monday to installation by Friday, right in time for @cca_interiordesign students to present their transformable structures to the reviewers. The table was disassembled last weekend, flat-packed, and is now on its way to New York! Big thanks to @sizlstudio for helping get everything ready for the movers. Many thanks to the Autodesk Technology Center in SF! We truly appreciate all the support from @tinybabysloth , @kimia_farahnak , and @ian_kimmerly on this project — and for everything we’ve been able to explore and create at Pier 9. @negarkalantar , @cca_arch_div , @cacollegeofarts #ccaarchdivision, #californiacollegeofthearts #ccaarchitecture #ccaarchitecturereview #ccaarchitecture_represents #ccaarchdivision #architecture #interiordesign #ccainteriordesign #ccainterior #ccaindustrialdesign

At CCA, architecture students adopted a geometry-based approach to integrate structural, ecological, and ethical considerations. Drawing inspiration from various sources, including the hanging chain models of Antoni Gaudi, the hanging cloth shells of Hans Isler, the minimal surfaces of Frei Otto, and Graphic Statics and form finding optimization of Philippe Block, the students incorporated computational approaches and digital fabrication techniques to develop three-dimensional funicular structures (compression-only). @cca_arch_div @cca.digital.craft.lab @cacollegeofarts #ccaarchitecture #ccarts #californiacollegeofthearts #ccaarchitecture_represents #ccaarchdivision #ccainteriordesign #ccaindustrialdesign #ccafirstyearprogram #ccafirstyear #ccadigitalcraftlab #ccainterior #catenary #cateneryarch #catenaryvault #catenarycurve #formfinding #freiotto #freiottoinspired #heinzisler #heinzislershell #funicular #funicularshell #tensilestructure #gridshell #gridshellstructure #parametricarchitecture #parametricdesign #grasshopper3d #kangaroograsshopper #rhinovault2

Utilizing a continuous double-shell structure has the potential to minimize construction mass and materials. The suggested shell designs comprise interconnected structural strips arranged in a woven-like pattern, forming dual-layered configurations. The gap between the two skins enables larger spans and higher load-bearing capability. The interaction between layers enhances overall stability, reducing the risk of buckling and deformation. Double-skin structures also contribute to improved thermal insulation and noise transmission. #ccaarchdivision #ccadigitalcraftlab #catenary #cateneryarch #catenaryvault #catenarycurve #formfinding #freiotto #freiottoinspired #heinzisler #heinzislershell #funicular #funicularshell #tensilestructure #gridshell #gridshellstructure #parametricarchitecture #parametricdesign #grasshopper3d #kangaroograsshopper #rhinovault2 #shellstructure #doublelayershell #structuralengineering #digitalfabrication #structuralstripes #dome #parametricarchitecture #embededintelligence

Expanding our exploration in Studio 0 at CCA, this study focuses on catenary structures, aiming to optimize their thinness using weak materials within compression-only designs. The goal is to get structures that are both strong and economically viable. Even though we've made progress in digital fabrication, there's still a big gap between what we can design and what we can actually build. Making complex curvy shapes is expensive, takes a lot of time, and often leads to wasted materials. Here, my aspiration is to explore techniques for crafting visually appealing and robust double curvature structures using as little material as possible, cutting down on costs and making them less complicated. #ccaarchitecture #ccarts #californiacollegeofthearts #ccaarchitecture_represents #ccaarchdivision #ccainteriordesign #ccaindustrialdesign #ccafirstyearprogram #ccafirstyear #ccadigitalcraftlab #ccainterior #catenary #cateneryarch #catenaryvault #catenarycurve #formfinding #freiotto #freiottoinspired #heinzisler #heinzislershell #funicular #funicularshell #tensilestructure #gridshell #gridshellstructure #parametricarchitecture #parametricdesign #grasshopper3d #kangaroograsshopper #rhinovault2

The main emphasis of my Studio 0 at CCA was to examine the process of form-finding. Given the important role that gravity plays in shaping both the aesthetic expression of buildings and their structural integrity, the study of catenary curves provided an opportunity to observe how gravitational forces interact with materials and forms. A Catenary is a curve that is formed when a chain is suspended from two points under its weight. Various asymmetrical curves can be created by adjusting the position and level of the endpoints and adding concentrated loads. In their first design project, first-year students at CCA experimented with combining and intersecting multiple catenary curves to produce a sculptural structure in space. Drawing inspiration from San Francisco's suspended bridges and the Gabriel chandelier designed by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, which utilize catenary curves, the students presented their contemporary chandelier designs for the San Francisco City Hall Rotunda. Intended to hang from the central dome above the Rotunda's Grand Staircase, the proposed chandeliers would illuminate the area. The force of gravity played a key role in determining the final shape of the chandelier, highlighting the elegance of catenary curves in the city of San Francisco, renowned for its bridges made of catenary arches. In the final project of Studio 0 at CCA, my freshman students explored the application of Catenary arch principles to create a thin, self-supporting pavilion structure that integrates skin, support, and form. Once the primary pavilion concepts were designed, the main challenge emerged in producing complex doubly curved surfaces using flat, non-stretchable material sheets. The first-year students addressed this by dividing the curvilinear surfaces into a series of flat, linear strips, which were then connected to form a self-supporting structure. The project aimed to investigate the creation of a 3D form with non-developable geometry from 2D patterns. Following the cutting of the strips, the students engaged in a precise, efficient, and relatively rapid assembly process. A fun aspect of the project was observing how the cut pieces flawlessly assembled to shape the final curvilinear geometry without the need for additional support, formwork, or custom-made molds. This project encouraged students to push the boundaries of design possibilities early in their journey at CCA. The use of such an efficient fabrication process with minimal waste provided an opportunity for future designers to consider lightweight structures that were not only visually compelling but also structurally sound and capable of withstanding external forces. My freshman students began Studio 0 (at CCA) by exploring the interplay of forms, forces, and masses. They started their design journey by hanging ball-chain pieces from their endpoints, making catenary arches. These arches served as an easy method for form-finding and exploring the balance between gravity and tension. The students noticed that flipping their hanging arches made a strong structure under compression. After making different hanging chains, they cut strips from cotton canvas, glued them together, and hung them to create fabric shells for pure tension. Adding resin made these fabric shells strong and stiff, turning them into funicular structures that could act in pure compression and support weight. This process helped first-year students learn a simple way to create efficient forms while using less material and reducing stress on the structure. A collection of Midterm Work from this past spring’s Studio 0 at CCA: Having a 1.5" X5.5" X24" piece of lumber, my freshman students thought of gravity as a force to balance a sculpture. At the beginning of the Spring 2022 semester, my students were asked to see how various objects behave differently when changing their center of gravity. For their second studio assignment, I asked them to make a sculpture out of just one piece of lumber with no waste, responding to the gravitational force. Excellent models by: Jose Arias-Patino, Abigail Van Kirk, Jerry Huang, Kathy Wang, Lufan Yang & Yihan Feng. #ccarts #californiacollegeofthearts #ccaarchitecture #ccaarchitecturereview #ccaarchitecture_represents #ccaarchdivision #architecture #interiordesign #ccainteriordesign #ccainterior #ccaindustrialdesign #studio #artschool #architectureschool #architecturestudents #architecturefaculty #architecturestudentblog #imadethis #transformabledesign #gravityfact #physicsfun #physics #playart #bayarea #sanfrancisco
