Last touches before the finals in a couple of days. Our Weitzman AAD students designing an archeological museum in ancient Side where Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Selçuk, and Ottoman architecture provides a richly layered strata for hybrid design explorations.

Model production is gearing up for next week's finals. This semester's project is set once more in the antique city of Side, Türkiye. The students from Weitzman's AAD program are designing a small archeological museum that integrates the foundations of an ancient fortification wall. The masonry of the original architecture serves as a departure point for new wall variants and stereotomic play. The museums develop upwards from detail to building.

ENG/TR Lithoscapes is a design research exercise that speculates on extraordinary architectural and geological hybrids of Phrygian, Cappadocia, and Derinkuyu, aiming to generate visions for new modes of synthetic worldmaking. As human interventions increase stress on our planet and lead to environmental destruction, alternative ways of conceptualizing the relationship between nature and architecture are needed.
Hybrid worlds, where organic and synthetic intelligences converge, offer a means to alleviate environmental pressure and expand our horizon with alternative environments that reframe the outdoors as a precious artifice. @ferdak@alperderinbogaz

Lithoscapes, Frigya, Kapadokya ve Derinkuyu’nun mimari ve jeolojik özelliklerinden yola çıkarak bu üç kültürel katmanı bir araya getiren özgün bir tasarım araştırmasıdır. Çalışma, bu birleşim üzerinden yeni mekânsal kurgulara ve dünya inşa etme biçimlerine dair düşünsel açılımlar sunmayı hedefler.
İnsanın doğaya müdahalesinin gezegen üzerindeki baskıyı artırdığı ve çevresel yıkımı hızlandırdığı günümüzde, mimarlık ile doğa arasındaki ilişkiyi yeniden tanımlayacak yaklaşımlara ihtiyaç duyulmaktadır.
Doğal ve yapay sistemlerin bir arada var olduğu ara mekânlar, çevresel yükü hafifletmenin yanı sıra, dış dünyayı değerli ve yeniden inşa edilebilir bir alan olarak düşünme imkânı sunar. Lithoscapes, bu bağlamda, mimarlık düşüncesine çevresel duyarlılığı içeren yeni bir perspektif kazandırmayı amaçlamaktadır.

Our Türkiye Studio this semester explored how to build with and on ancient ruins. In Side, a town on the Pamphylian coast, this is indeed happening as new buildings and excavation sites blend into each other in strange and unexpected ways. Seeing an opportunity in this unorthodox approach to landmarks, the studio designed a new bathhouse on top of an ancient Roman one, exploring the frictions in-between.

Wedged deep into the Taurus mountains this ancient city was only one of two in the entire region that successfully resisted being conquered by Alexander the Great.
