🧑💼 ABOUT THE CLIENT
The Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art is the longest-running survey of contemporary Australian art and has been a part of the Adelaide Festival since 1990. The theme for 2026, “Yield Strength”, is intended to examine “how materials, selfhood and society are tested — and transformed — under pressure.” At the heart of this concept are notions of time, change, decay, tension, and adaptation — in a word, entropy. The work of 24 artists, in varied media, is currently on display at the Art Gallery of South Australia, Samstag Museum of Art, and Adelaide Botanic Garden.

🦸 FROM BASE DESIGN
“At the centre of the identity sits Protocol, a programmatic typeface developed in collaboration with Counter Forms. Driven by live environmental data: temperature, wind speed, surface pressure in Adelaide, and the S&P 500, a global barometer of financial markets. Protocol mutates every six hours. New iterations are released twice daily throughout the Biennial. On the final day of the exhibition, the system reaches its programmed demise: bent, fragmented and exhausted.”

🧑💻 BRAND NEW’S REACTION by Josh Berta
Ultimately, I think the font, as an experimental exercise in typography, belongs in the show, not as the face of it. Which is to say, it’s pretty awesome, but it shouldn’t be everything.
