BLACKOUT SONGS
By @joe_white_88
Directed by @rorydmcgregor
Running now for one more week at @mcctheater !
This play stole my heart from the first. The story is achingly beautiful.
The cast are as beautifully committed and focused today as they were on day one.
The crew was small but mighty, and I was so happy to be working with some long time friends and collaborators through this bleak winter. Nothing beats that kind of shorthand.
This a gorgeous show, somehow done with only two actors. But don’t take my word for it! The New York Times calls it an art house film in three dimensions. Eep!
Thank you Rory for bringing us all together.

COR. PROCESS!
So much of my love for this crazy ass show stems from the process. Much of that process is inappropriate to share on the internet but I want to give a taste. Like the time @sarinmonae explained to 200 second graders why we use guns in theater. Or the first time @mckinleybcubed put on the gown of humility. Testing the blood packs on myself over and over cus the scene just wasn’t bloody enough. Brushing off @amandajroberge when she asked if I always use neon green just before realizing all the neon green trim in the @theatreforanewa stock was from my last show there. Receiving finishing samples from @bethanyjoycostumes and managing not to cry. Ordering a beautiful golden carmel suit for @msroslynr which arrived lime green and she pulled it off anyway. Struggling to make my weird drape idea work on stage and everyone being game 🥹 learning quite a bit about weapons. Mounting body cams for live video feeds on motocross armor. An actor asking if she could have her costume made for her personal life.
The months of drawing.
I could go on and on. I always fall in love with the actors, and the fabrics and the crew and the shenanigans.
We’re crazy for doing this and I’m so glad we do.
Happy opening to my cast and crew fam at Oedipus!
What a truly enriching experience being associate costume designer to @understandingconchita . It’s been a couple years since I’ve assisted anyone but I couldn’t pass up the chance to learn from this phenomenon of a designer. I am so grateful for every time he stopped and explained a decision he made, or showed me the European way of working. I got a masterclass in tailoring but also in how to lead a team. Thank you @kabelnyc for introducing us.
None of it would be possible without the unbelievable team backstage. #abbeyrayburn is the wardrobe supervisor we all dream of working with, not to mention her crack team of dressers and stitchers who are perfectionists about the clothes but do it with an easy smile.
Shout out to the artisans we got to work with at @ericwinterlinginc , @bethanyjoycostumes , @parsonsmeares and @jollycraftstudio . It’s always a privilege for me to get to work with such talented people.
Getting to work at @studio54.nyc was a real trip. All theaters have ghosts, but these ones know how to party. The things those walls have seen! I’ll never forget it.
Chicago!!!!!
Did not go as planned.
My paces were all over the place, my tech wasn’t working, @jflinter and @zaaajn were texting me my splits as they were published on the marathon app.
The miles felt like they whizzed by but I was running so much slower than I had wanted to and was constantly pushing to catch up.
That day, I learned to respect the distance. No matter my training, no matter the course, 26.2 miles is really fucking far.
Shout out to my continued sponsorship by @brittboltonjewelry , @wy_guy & @liamgriffy lol
And to my dad and cousin @ben.westhoff for supporting me the whole weekend.

This hilarious and gutting show finishes out what has been a five month sprint for me. Lotsa shows, lotsa techs, LOTSA clothes.
But this one sticks out as the cherry on top. A joyful little unexpected sweet bite. A cute full circle moment. My first job with @clubbedthumb was as @astabennie ‘s assistant on Men on Boats in 2015. Before grad school, before unionizing, before I knew what dramaturgy meant, before I had instagram. No photos of the process or her and I together there exist, and I’ll never forget it. That time, I barged the soles of some thrifted shoes back in and wedged them under a rock outside. This time, I distressed a backpack by hitting it against a wall in the rain. It’s wonderful to come back to an artistic community and find the best parts unchanged but the fees more than doubled. They do their best to take care of their people and it shows.
I’m getting long in the tooth and this is becoming more about me than Milo’s play, so I’ll just say that Milo and Laura are a dynamite team that anyone would be lucky to work with so watch out for whatever they do next.
Also Mary Wiseman. Long live our queen.

Last week we opened GOOD PENNY by DN Bashir at the Fisher Center!
So much stagecraft I’ve never experienced before: we wrapped the actors in Saran Wrap, we dropped money on them from the sky, human cattle and bovine people? You name it we did it.
This powerful, corporate but make it overtly Greek and subtly queer ensemble piece was directed by my friend and perpetual smartest person in the room @kw.wilks Seriously, there is no joy quite like listening to Katherine nerd out about the classics.
I gained so many new collaborators on this one!

This play is a lot of things, and I really love it.
Dressing the people felt like a small amount of effort when compared to emotional energy required to open my armor, expose my soft underbelly and examine my own scars.
It’s rare and exciting and scary to be trusted and listened to the way Jack trusts and listens to me.
These actors glow from within and illuminate our tiny space with a warmth and openness I admire so much.
These are some unorganized stray thoughts about a process I’m still processing. So grateful to get to work with some of my favorite people.
