Will Dagger returns this spring at Studio Seaview.

wowed to be returning to these artists and this play, a year older and haha wiser, if wisdom amounts to a more scrupulous reckoning with one’s own bewilderment. i don’t know. i’ve missed the particular way this thing can turn people towards each other. whether you caught it last time or not, i’ll be glad if i see you there this go around.

if art could permanently save the world it would have done so by now, but i think maybe it does do so temporarily again and again and again and again. it’s been an honor to visit this wonderful play at this terrifying time, especially with this particular herd of humans. one single way of thinking, governed by narcissism and greed, has reached its claws into almost every corner of life, and every day the sphere of its absurdity grows wider. but we’ve been here before, none of us is alone, and laughter meaningfully diminishes its power. happy opening, dream team.

i’d be ecstatic to make any play with these people, but the ache and quiet wisdom inside this particular thing is really something else. reminds me of falling in love with theatre for the first time, learning how it can take us to places others in our lives are counting on us to get to.

We have a kid now whose name is Wren and we still can’t believe it. He kind of looks like all of our families but he’s cuter than anyone we know, and every day is a failed attempt at a routine and a wrestle with fear and an uncanny revisitation from the forces and graces that made us. He’s teaching us to have patience with ourselves and our uncertainty, while every day our friends and family make undeniably evident the cosmic scope and significance of generosity. His full name, George Wren Mahony Dagger (Hebrew name Ezra Chaim — “help,” “life”) honors many loved ones whose memory we hope he carries with him — our grandfathers Gael and William and I.S. Weissbrodt and Eli, Will’s mother Ellen, and Mikhaela’s grandmother Connaught. The R sound in Wren also invokes Mikhaela’s great aunt Rhoda, Will’s uncle Ramsey, and our good friend Robbie. Though currently sequestered within the myopia of brand new first-time parenting, we hope to remember that caring for our kid means caring for the world he’ll inherit. Valuing him necessitates valuing the lives and dignity of children everywhere. These days Wren’s eyes are an incredible burst of silver and indigo. We’ve been told this can change, and we’re sure countless things about him will, but it’s crazy how clear it is that we will always love him wildly, in every moment, exactly as he is.

Closed @you.dont.have.to.do.anything on Friday and missing it fiercely. I snuck this vid of our team calmly and lovingly building a palace of a play in a shoebox of a theatre during maybe the most idyllically collaborative tech week I’ve ever experienced. Everyone on this was a generous genius and I’m so proud of the intricacy of the truth we helped each other tell, and the ways it trusted our audiences. Felt like both a revolution and a return to something nearly lost but crucial. Grateful beyond words.
