As a freshman in college, I had the opportunity to sit in on my first professional rehearsal process. Playwrights Horizons needed someone to be on book during tech for a new Sam Hunter play they were producing called Pocatello. I idolized Sam and his work and saw myself in his characters. Their humanity, their contradictions, and their quiet, complex queerness. I saw myself in them long before I was able to see these things in me. Sam and I wouldn’t meet in that tech process, but 11 years later we’d make our West End debuts together.
It’s the middle of the night in Rotterdam and the phone rings. Arnold picks up. He speaks to his brother for the first time in years.
A play about the fallibility of memory, the stories we tell to make sense of our suffering, and the complexity of forgiveness.
The world premiere of Samuel D. Hunter’s Grangeville opens tonight.
