Spiritual World presents Center of the Universe — a 32-minute improvisational flute journey by
@ashperson , recorded inside the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory on Vancouver Island, a National Historic Site completed in 1918. Built in response to major advances in telescope technology in the early 20th century, it is home to the 108-year-old Plaskett Telescope, the second-largest in the world at the time of its inauguration. From its completion in 1918 through the 1960s, the observatory stood as one of the world’s leading centres for astrophysical research.
Having been introduced to — and completely captivated by — Ashleigh Ball’s extraordinary talent as a flutist through two recording projects with
@t3al_4real , the idea emerged to further explore her connection to the instrument in its purest form. Inspired by Paul Horn — who dedicated a large part of his career to recording improvisational flute albums in iconic World Heritage Sites through his Inside series, and spent the latter half of his life in Victoria, British Columbia, where Ashleigh now resides — we set out to find a local setting that would capture a similar spirit and sense of resonance.
Recorded in single takes beneath the Plaskett Telescope, Ball moves between alto and soprano flute, each note blooming into the dome’s vast natural reverb — meditative, timeless, and deeply human.
