“We’ve Always Been Here” - a film by Khevyn ‘BE’ Ibrahim that shares the experiences of their 6 person Ivorian family, growing up, living and working in London. BE asked me to score the last section of the film and it was one of my favourite projects of 2024. The music came together quite easily for me. Watching the edit, I felt that even if it had no music, it wouldn’t take away from the strength of storytelling. When you listen to BE’s parents and siblings share their memories, thoughts, hopes, and dreams, you really get an insight into their lives as you look at old photos and camcorder footage from their childhood. I was so touched by their accounts that I felt all I needed to do was lightly decorate the words that were being spoken. We talked about the Kora being a principle element of the music so I decided to centre the score around this beautiful instrument. The vocals merely act as an ornament to its lilting melody. So instead of conceding to colonialist ideals, we want to showcase a series of short films that explore the multiplicity of Black Queer Experiences.
