Just a few pictures from our yesterday celebration of the Black History Month 2025 in North Acton and Park Royal. Over twenty people joined us at North Acton Square and after a short introduction, we walked through Acton Cemetery to stop at the grave of Sir Samuel Lewis, a son of freed slaves brought back to Africa, educated in England eminent lawyer and activist, first Mayor of Freetown in Sierra Leone and the first West African to be knighted by Queen Victoria. Sheltered from the road traffic, we went on to introduce an eminent Actonian from Guyana, John Barbour James, a clerk and activist, and his activist daughter Amy Barbour James. Before we left the green oasis, I invited Seun Osipitian
@workseun to tell us his story and then we walked on along Park Royal Road, taking the stairs towards Sunbeam Road to hear and share more stories. A person who used to work in the area many years ago was really impressed to see how the area has improved since the
@oldoakparkroyal started to oversee the redevelopment.
Our first host was Cynthia Grafton-Holt of Cynthia Grafton-Holt Couture, a designer of bespoke wedding gowns. We were truly touched by her story and impressed how talented, hard-working and humble this woman of Jamaican parents was. When Cynthia said that she doesn’t feel she fully belongs here in Britain and nor does she feel at home in Jamaica, I could identify with her, but that’s a topic for another story.
Not all the people who took my invitation to feature in this project could be at their studios on the day. Thus, they sent me their stories which I had printed for the day and then, saving my delicate autumnal voice, asked participants to read them near their studios. They took turns reading about Rashida of
@RashidaPatisserie and
@8_strikes_corner , and I told them about Camilla Camus – Doughan
@_ccd_art_services - art conservator specializing in the conservation of paper artworks and pieces. Visiting Wayne of
@fashtagclothing ,
@talkingandexploring1 and I could collect our brand new branded tops! Great to offer such experience when collaborating with
@gosad_uk and
@ealingcouncil !
As I'm reaching the word limit, I'll continue in the comments, OK?
