On May 7 NE+AR hosted its first event at @hub_lombardini22 With Extreme Spaces, the goal is to build a platform for dialogue between architecture and neuroscience, capable of translating extreme conditions into practical design tools. The event aims to reflect on, interpret, and transfer the principles that shape spatial experience in critical contexts, in order to redefine criteria, methods, and responsibilities in contemporary design. It is both a theoretical reflection and an operational step: using extreme conditions to bring design back to its primary function, supporting human cognitive, perceptual, and relational needs. More news soon! A warm thanks to @lombardini22

Happy New Year. An excerpt from one of our projects: The Banyan Tree at Kinan Theeni is thus the symbol of the resilience of the people of Fulidhoo, it is the sign post for travellers seeking authentic nature based retreats and spiritual rejuvenation in a Maldivian island, a tree deck centre naturally reinforced with the island’s age old soil, its roots maneuvering the reef’s hard edged rocks and its fresh water ways a retreat centre to bring the seeking traveller back to oneself through the comfort of the established Kinan hospitality and additional immersive experiences that enable an exploration of the livelihood based crafts and skills of its islanders, a deep connection with the earth, the tree’s meandering roots, unbreakable branches and vines, and divine skies through its receptacles; the leaves, flowers, and its nutrition rich fruit - Wa’ Theeni. #freepalesti̇ne

Love our weekly ‘BrainBanks’ at @space_syntax . Held at 1200 on Thursdays, these are informal gatherings led mainly by colleagues across the practice to provide updates on work in progress & personal research, but occasionally bringing guests in to present their own work. #SpaceSyntax #UrbanPlanning #Digital #Design #CPD

SUPERSIZE X 10!. A SERIES OF EXPERT’S WORKSHOPS FOR RE-USE VISIONS FOR TEMPELHOF AIRPORT. The jumbo, jumbo Nazi Airport, never used by them became the only access to West Berlin after WW II. Sophie Loren and other stars of the Berlinale Film Fest entered here. Exciting days with colleagues from Holland, Sweden, Switzerland, to name a few. Urban Catalyst, Denkstatt, MDRDV, David Sim, Space Syntax…. Looking forward to the next 5 workshops! @flughafentempelhof_thf @tempelhoferfeld @tempelhof_bln @urban__catalyst @denkstatt_sarl @think_softer #reuse #urbantransformation #airportreuse #robin_winogrond #landscapearchitecture #urbandesign #placemaking #urbanplacemaking #urbanhistory #arquitecturadelpaisaje #urbanforestry #urbannature #economyofnature #architecturallectures #urbandevelopment #buildingcities #landskapsarkitektur #livablecities #landschaftsarchitektur #urbanfuture #urbanimagination #urbanistik #placemaking_europe #places_journal

📣 New research 📣 When you think about it, it seems logical that more people experience buildings from the outside than the inside. But we wanted to test that assumption. So last year we commissioned @space_syntax to carry out research to get a robust measure. The results suggest that passers-by are getting short-changed. Find out more at the link in our bio.

Eckersley O'Callaghan is honoured to be a part of the Foster + Partners competition winning team to design the national memorial to Queen Elizabeth II at the heart of St James’s Park. The winning design concept celebrates Queen Elizabeth’s life through a time of great change, balancing tradition and modernity, public duty and private faith, the United Kingdom and a global Commonwealth. The design concept illustrates how she brought these dualities together: two gates, two gardens, joined by a bridge and unifying path. The winning team includes artist Yinka Shonibare CBE RA and celebrated landscape designer, Michel Desvigne. @fosterandpartners Creative Lead Contractual Lead Project Manager Architect Structural MEP Engineer Landscape & Horticulture Coordination Lighting Designer Sustainability Principal Designer @yinkashonibarestudio Artist @micheldesvignepaysagiste Landscape Architect Eckersley O'Callaghan Glass Structure Engineers Nigel Dunnett Studio Ecology Consultant @studio.adrien.gardere Memorial Curator @2x4design Digital Consultant Wayfinding Consultant David Bonnett Associates Accessibility Consultant DP9 Limited Planning Consultant @purcell.architecture Heritage Consultant @space_syntax Pedestrian Flow Consultant @gt_llp Cost Consultant @arupgroup Logistics & Security Consultant

Published today, Space Syntax: Selected papers by Bill Hillier provides a canon of works that reflect the progression of Hillier’s ideas from the early publications of the 1970s to his most recent work, published before his death in 2019. Professor Bill Hillier spent most of his career at The Bartlett, UCL, where he founded and developed, with a team of colleagues, an original research programme that set the study of architecture on a firm scientific basis. His transformational way of thinking about buildings and cities influenced generations of scholars, researchers and practitioners within the built environment disciplines and way beyond – in fields ranging from archaeology and biology to physics and zoology. The cover is primarily green with white and black text. Below the title and editors' names is an aerial black and white urban plan or network.

Regenerative Urban Neighbourhoods – a data-based strategy for doubling housing numbers through innovative development frameworks RUN!, by Yolande Barnes Consulting & Space Syntax. @tim_stonor , @space_syntax , @annasrose Vote for your favourite entry to win #TheDavidsonPrize People's Choice Prize via our link in bio, supported by @Humaniseorg The Race to solve the housing poly-crisis Unaffordability, inaccessibility, fuel poverty, low amenity, unhealthy places and nature-decline combine into a 'wicked’ problem requiring a radical, multidisciplinary approach to solve. To deliver the homes and places we want, at speed, we need to RUN! ‘Regenerative Urban Neighbourhood’ principles have many applications, including multifamily housing and bare-land developments. But we think the most important is to optimise land-use in existing places. Additional homes, added amenities and a better environment can be provided to homeowners in already-serviced but low-density, low-intensity, suburban neighbourhoods. RUN! is a framework for community control, capable of adding all forms of value. Individuals retain ownership of their homes but separate and pool their land using digital technology. Tokens are created using blockchain to embody land value at 25% of the home’s open-market value. Individual owners have shares in the RUN and buy back their land tokens over a 50-year period. This creates an income stream enabling the RUN to raise finance from private investors. RUNs could fund maintenance, manage neighbourhoods, undertake environmental retrofit and, with Developing Partners, undertake regenerative redevelopment for collective benefit. There is potential for genuinely ‘bottom-up’, co-created, community-built and self-procured initiatives (and profits) to be realised. If this new type of development industry is created, our models show: housing doubled, cheaper homeownership, improved environment, developer and householder profits. We can grow the economy in locations that wouldn’t otherwise be capable of conventional development. The economic model IS the design. See every featured idea on our website!

This week, the Academic Body focused on networks and mobility. The seminars featured Tim Stonor, Architect and Urban Planner; Managing Director, Space Syntax, London, who explored how city design influences movement, land use and community connections, using ‘space syntax’ to optimise urban performance; and Pierandrea Angius, Studio Master, Architectural Association (AA), Design Research Lab (AADRL), London, United Kingdom; Senior Consultant, Ferrari S.p.A., Modena, Italy, who discussed how advanced computational techniques are reshaping transport networks and mobility systems to make cities more resilient and adaptive to environmental challenges. #SustainableCities #NFI2025 #UrbanInnovation #NormanFosterInstitute
