UCL in East Asia: building our shared future ✨
Across two cities and one unforgettable week, 600 people reminded us why this matters.
In April, UCL alumni and friends gathered in Beijing and Hong Kong for the first Asian launches of #HereItWillHappen – and what a moment it was to be part of 💜
When people who've carried UCL with them – across careers, across countries, across decades – come together in a room, individual ambition becomes something collective. The Beijing launch, co-hosted by UCL President & Provost Dr Michael Spence and Professor Li Wei, and the Hong Kong launch weren't just events. They were a declaration: that this community is ready to help shape what UCL does next, and why.
On both nights, that conversation came alive – celebrating two centuries of discovery, exploring the power of philanthropy to accelerate change, and asking how UCL's global research strengths can be directed at the problems our world can't afford to ignore.
These aren't rhetorical questions for UCL. In Beijing, our academics were at Tsinghua University running workshops on computational healthcare and hepatology. In Hong Kong, Dr Spence was on the stage at the THE Asia Universities Summit, making the case for universities as anchors of values and long-term resilience – not just knowledge factories.
But the heart of the trip was YOU, our alumni! Our community across East Asia has always been one of UCL's most vital – and in our April launch, that showed.
Here, it will happen is just getting started in this part of the world. Stay close – there's more to come 🌏

As part of #FacesOfUCL we're now spotlighting alumni who are transforming health 🙌
Meet Professor Ajit Yoganathan – an innovator in biomedical engineering
In 1970, a 19-year-old Ajit arrived in London from Sri Lanka to study chemical engineering at UCL. A chance seminar at Caltech changed the course of his life, introducing him to the emerging world of biomedical engineering.
Over five decades at Georgia Tech, he invented the field of prosthetic heart-valve engineering, developed life-saving devices for adults and children with heart disease, and trained generations of engineers now leading programmes across every continent.
Elected to the US National Academy of Engineering in 2015, Ajit's greatest pride isn't the accolades – it's the people he's mentored.

This April, Faces of UCL is focused on Transforming Health. Here at UCL, people have developed life-saving cures, vaccines and diagnostic tools, transformed patient care, and challenged stigma.
Richard Ross CBE and Rosetrees have backed some of the most innovative ideas at UCL, which have gone on to receive over £1bn in major grants. By funding projects at the very early stages, they provide the data-based evidence needed to advance life-saving research for the benefit of millions of people worldwide.
This partnership has been critical in improving essential research in many disease areas and establishing the world’s first centre for rare dementias.

So many alumni tell us that their time at UCL shaped who they became – late-night debates, friendships forged in Bloomsbury, discovering new ideas and finding confidence in a community of curious minds. But that experience should be accessible to everyone, regardless of financial background
Support from alumni funds scholarships and grants to help with extra-curriculars – so students don't miss out on the moments that matter most.

From the Thames to la Seine 🗼 ✨
This April, Here, it will happen – our new philanthropic and engagement campaign – made it's European debut in Paris at the Le Cercle de l'Union Interalliée, welcoming nearly 150 alumni and supporters for an evening of big ideas and meaningful connections.
Hosted by UCL President & Provost Dr Michael Spence and Professor Lauren Andres, Pro-Vice-Provost for UCL's Grand Challenge of Inequalities, the evening featured inspiring talks from two of UCL's leading AI researchers:
Professor Ben Guedj spoke about improving the mathematical foundations of AI and building greater confidence in AI decision-making – moving from systems that simply predict, to ones that inform and empower human judgement.
Professor Angela Aristidou shared her work on ensuring smaller organisations aren't left behind in AI adoption, and unveiled the vision for the new UCL Centre for Transformative Technologies – a global hub dedicated to making the most powerful technologies of our time work for everyone.
We also heard from alum Christiana Onyebujoh (UCL Drug Discovery and Pharma Management MSc 2018), who spoke about the role UCL's global alumni network played in shaping her career – a powerful reminder of what it truly means to be part of this community.
It was an evening of ambition, inspiration and celebration of UCL's next century of impact 🌍
