MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK During this week we have been thinking a lot about the farming community. Right now it’s as hard to farm as it’s ever been. We wanted to share this honest and tender chat we had with Hugh Addison @theborderlinechallenge . We can’t thank Hugh enough for his openness, hopefully his words can provide support for anyone in need. Following a chat this week we also wanted to share that Hugh, his sister and a friend are once again going to try to swim across the Irish Sea - last time the weather stopped them from doing so. This is for the @theborderlinechallenge all in aid of the wonderful charity @rabicharity . Please join us in supporting them and in turn supporting the vital work that RABI do supporting the farming community in crisis. A word of caution before listening to this chat in full, as you can hear, this episode contains sensitive material. It can be listened here: /six-inches-of-soil-the-podcast/episodes/698b5247d4ce946316e97268 🔗 in bio or via any podcast app. If you or someone you love is struggling, help is available. In the UK, you can call 111 and select option 2 to access urgent mental health support. In the U.S., you can call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. If you’re elsewhere, please seek out local crisis services in your country. You’re not alone. It’s okay to ask for help.

UPCOMING CLA EVENT: Rooted in the Future: Regenerative Farming at Pastures Farm Tuesday 19 May | 4.30 pm – 8.30 pm Pastures Farm, Caxton, Cambridge CB23 3PF Price: £12 inc. VAT Nuffield Scholar and farmer Tom Pearson will take you on a tour of his home farm in Caxton where you will learn about his team's regenerative farming, agroforestry and composting, as well as their research and trials. Tom combines his work as a regenerative arable farmer with a background as a medical doctor and public health specialist. He is passionate about championing the importance of nutrition and health - such as local food access, community engagement and food education. He has been involved in the recently published Vitagri white paper looking at farming systems and nutrition. During this visit Tom and the team will discuss their work using Johnson Su bioreactor compost extracts, to deliver a living microbial inoculant at drilling. This is part of the combination of activities aiming to improve soil health, plant nutrient uptake, and ultimately carbon sequestration and climate resilient soils. They will also discuss their ADOPT (InnovateUK/DEFRA funded) trial looking at 'reactive agronomy', foliar nitrogen applications and nitrogen use efficiency. You will also see Adrienne Gordon’s Sweet Pea Market Garden, which featured in the documentary @sixinchesofsoil . The garden uses around three acres of land for producing salads, microgreens, edible flowers, and seasonal fruit and vegetables which are sold at local farmers’ markets and farm shops. Additionally, you will hear how the agroforestry project at Pastures Farm currently involves dessert apple trees and how walnut and hazelnut trees are being considered. And you will learn about Regenerate Outcomes' involvement to generate carbon credits. A supper, showcasing local produce and refreshments, are included in the ticket price. This event is supported by: @regenerateoutcomes , @hcrlaw and @virginmoney To book contact [email protected] or call 01638 590 429.

🥳 WIGGLY WORMS 🪱 🪱 Every Wednesday the highlight of the day is when the pupils of Barnham CEVC Primary School feed their worms in the @wormcity_wormery . 🪱 🪱 then produce ‘worm poop’, the children harvest it and use the vermicompost in their raised beds to boost plant growth and improve soil structure. Amy Arnold, head teacher, @_growingthefuture created this day. With her team they have embedded teaching the children all about soil, farming, food and the environment into all lessons. Their work is truly inspirational and you can see them in the short film produced for @soil_ed_uk 🎧 To hear more from 🤩 Amy tune in to our next podcast episode, due to be released next week. For now you can subscribe and be alerted when the episode is live. 🎙️ #blackgold #childrenimmersedinnature

🦫 🦫 🦫 💦 In the last post we heard from Bella Lowes and now we are following it up with gorgeous footage she sent from her farm, Mill Barton in Devon @diggandco this was from last summer, 2025. It was a drought but despite that their cows had water thanks to the clever beavers who had created dams in their river. 🦫 Beavers are known as ‘ecosystem engineers’ for their unusual ability to shape their surroundings to suit themselves. They build dams on streams and other watercourses to create pools and wetlands where they feel secure to feed and interact with one another. Researchers found that beaver dams and their wetlands can significantly reduce storm flows by an average of 30% during periods of heavy rainfall. The research points to the benefits for flood prone communities downstream of beaver wetlands as they slow the movement of water, reducing the peak flow levels in rivers and streams.
