Hello New Followers!
I’m Lara + I run Skool Beanz CIC gardening club for children aged 4+ from our very own children’s allotment in my village of Chilthorne Domer, near Yeovil in South Somerset UK.
We run weekly after-school, weekend + holiday clubs from mid February to Christmas. The children learn how to grow delicious vegetables, beautiful cut flowers + how to garden to help nature with plenty of upcycled art + FUN.
Think of it like a Forest School but a children’s garden nurturing the young gardeners of the future.
The magical allotment is designed especially for children with lots of bright colours, quirky veg, child size veg + flower beds, Scarecrows, ‘Muddy Buddy’ compost heap, Quiet Wildlife Garden with tiny pond + Secret Den, Polytunnel classroom/ seedling propagation + small raised bed, Rainwater collecting stations, Compost Loo, Pizza Oven, Circular lawn for Kid’s Yoga, Dahlias for days, sunflower + pumpkin patch, Goosegog Corner + Community Orchard.
Our first club started in April 2021 with 4 children attending, now we welcome hundreds every year. I also teach gardening at the primary school next door on Fridays + bring the children to the allotment.
All children are welcome + we have started to offer a SENshine Club, Homeschool mornings, Birthday Parties, full day summer holiday clubs, school visits + we work with CAMHS at the NHS.
My dream is for there to be Children’s Gardens like Skool Beanz all over the country.
With statistics like 1 in 5 Children suffer from a diagnosable mental health condition + the UK is one of the most nature depleted countries on the planet, it’s no coincidence that the more we destroy nature + spend time on our screens the worse our health becomes. Children’s Gardens are the answer. Not only will being in a garden improve a child’s physical + mental wellbeing, it will help our precious nature too.
I have seen the Skool Beanz Children’s Allotment transform lives, including the elderly residents in our community.

Hugelkultar Raised Beds 💦
Last year during the summer months it was really difficult growing anything in our raised beds. As soon as we watered, it ran off to the ground level.
So this year we are experimenting + seeing what happens using straw bales. In the hope they retain the water like a sponge. We will plant up with small plug plants.
My only concern is that the bales might reach a high temperature as they start to compost down and cook the plants!
Will keep you updated 🌞

Skool Beanz could not function without all the help from our team of wonderful volunteers + ongoing support from my family, the parents, teachers, villagers + the children who alway bring enthusiasm + joy to every gardening club 🌷
Skool Beanz started off on one allotment as a weekly Saturday morning gardening club on 24th April 2021 with just 4 children from the village attending. By the end of that first year we had 18 children attending.
Last year in 2025 we welcomed over 200 children and this year we now cover 5 plots, running after school clubs from Tuesday - Friday, a homeschool Weds morning club, Saturday morning club and full day holiday clubs and soon we will starting a weekly gardening club with CAMHS.
Inspired by Great Thunberg, I wanted to ‘do something’ for the children in my community and our precious nature. This has grown into something beyond my wildest dreams. It is not easy. It’s bloomin hard work. But worth every back breaking second! Finding purpose with such meaning in this crazy world is a huge privilege. If you are feeling helpless right now, look to help your community and help the young people who live in it. It’s the greatest legacy we can leave 🙏
Big thanks to my friend + mentor + huge inspiration - the Willy Wonka of Veg @charles_dowding 🥕
