River Action is proudly independent.
We don’t take money from the Government or polluters, so we can hold power to account without fear or favour.
If charities are relied upon to clean up the mess from polluting industries, the system is failing.
Our priorities are clear:
🚫 Stop pollution at source
⚖️ Enforce the law
💥 Hold polluters accountable
Polluters must be investigated and prosecuted. Real deterrence depends on the real risk of criminal sanctions, including substantial fines and, in serious cases, custodial sentences. Anything less risks turning environmental damage into a cycle that is managed, not prevented.

@tesco , @asda and @morrisons have been caught… hiding things. 👀
For years, these supermarkets pointed to the @redtractorfood label to reassure customers their food met environmental standards 🌱
But after regulators ruled those claims MISLEADING… those assurances seem to have quietly disappeared. 🤔
Thousands of you have asked these supermarkets to provide assurance that the products we buy are not polluting rivers.
But rather than respond, they have backed away hoping no one would notice..
Well, you’ve been busted.
Supermarkets - we’re watching! Don't delete the problem, fix it.

🚨NEWS! Thousands rally in mass protest, urging Starmer to end the pollution of Britain’s waterways
The UK public have risen in outrage at the state of our rivers, lakes and seas. The government’s first 100 days in power are up. Time for excuses is over. #MarchForCleanWater

Today marks the official start of the bathing water season in England - but a designated bathing water is no guarantee that a river is safe to swim in.
We fully support bathing water designations and the communities fighting to secure them for their local rivers and coastlines. These sites help shine a spotlight on water quality. However, designation alone does not make our rivers safe.
Last year, the Environment Agency rated all but 2 of England’s 14 designated river bathing waters as “poor”. Despite legal obligations, water companies continue to pollute rivers, putting public health and wildlife at risk.
This is the result of a broken system driven by:
💷 chronic underinvestment by privatised water companies
🚜 pollution from industrial-scale agriculture
⚖️ weak enforcement by regulators
Until the Government ends the era of private profit before public benefit, water quality will continue to fall short - regardless of how many bathing waters are designated.

Today’s King’s Speech signals another attempt to reform the water industry through the Clean Water Bill. But without addressing the failures of privatisation, we risk more of the same: pollution for profit. 💩🤑
Any serious plan to restore our rivers must tackle not only sewage discharges, but also the growing impact of agricultural pollution, including runoff from slurry and fertilisers. More help for our farmers is desperately needed!
👋 @defrauk , regulatory tinkering will not save our rivers; we need a far more ambitious strategy to #RescueOurRivers
What do the Senedd election results mean for Welsh rivers? 🏴
With Plaid Cymru set to lead a minority government, major questions remain over sewage and agricultural pollution, failing river health and the future of water regulation in Wales.

Decades of mismanagement, political negligence, pollution and commercial extraction of its resources have left Lough Neagh blighted by a pestilence of blue-green algae, choking the life out of the Lough and putting it at risk of total ecosystem collapse. This festival shows what the Lough means to the community locally, and globally, bringing people together to fight for its future.
Following the success of our exhibition ‘Natures Revolt’ in 2024 which blended art and environmental resistance, the Save Lough Neagh campaign are organising this follow up event, gathering the loughshore communities for a two day festival of standing up to extraction and exploitation, and artistic expression - and to bring together environmental campaigns across Ireland impacted by this crisis and beyond. Acting together, we have the power to push for system change, secure a future for Lough Neagh, and demand accountability from those who have plundered it and profiteered from its destruction.
🎟️ Register for a free ticket for the Film Festival and view the schedule starting from 9am both days at saveloughneagh.com, and afterwards join the march for Lough Neagh at 12:30pm Sunday May 17th starting from the Battery Bar, Co.Tyrone.
Sir David Attenborough turns 100.
For decades, he has helped us see the natural world: its beauty, its fragility, and what we stand to lose.
From the smallest streams to the great oceans, his storytelling not only informs us - it continues to move us and inspire action across the world.
Now, it’s our turn to carry that forward - to stand up for nature, from source to sea.
Thank you, Sir David. 💙🌊
🚨 NEWS! Thousands of serious pollution incidents downgraded without direct inspection.
A Channel 4 News investigation discovered that nearly 6,000 serious pollution incidents involving water companies were reportedly downgraded without direct inspection over the past decade. 😡
This raises major questions about whether environmental regulators have been properly funded and empowered to hold polluters to account. The normalisation of industrial-scale environmental harm cannot continue while rivers, lakes and coastal waters deteriorate.
