#30YearsofDesign: Pipe Shop Venue at the Shipyards (2019)
#TBT to transforming this heritage pipefitters building into a popular event space @theshipyards ! 👏
The 1940s Pipefitters Building in the shipyards was originally where pipe systems were laid out for new ships. 🚢 It had no central heating since it was kept warm by machinery inside. Proscenium worked with @cityofnorthvancouver to transform the facility into an adaptable and desirable event space, celebrating its heavy timber structure.
Our scope added washrooms, a servery, a projector surface, and HVAC and acoustic treatments, while keeping the bright and industrial aesthetic. An architecturally unique staircase made of bent steel will connect to a future mezzanine and bridal lounge.

#30YearsofDesign: 4th & Burrard (2018)
Standing proud on the corner of 4th & Burrard! Proscenium designed this 3-storey mixed-use project for a long-time client to provide a new home for @comorgoplayoutside , with two levels of office space above.
Design Highlights:
➡️ The building is wrapped by a curtain wall of architectural concrete and wood-look metal panels, creating a warm and inviting exterior.
➡️A vibrant red canopy provides weather protection for pedestrians. 🌧️
➡️The “sliding planes” of the building, with its intersecting horizontal and vertical lines, adds visual intrigue to the busy corner in Vancouver’s Kitsilano neighbourhood.
➡️Transparency to the stairs animates the sculptural facade, using vertical circulation to provide a visual anchor stitching together levels of stratified program.

#30YearsofDesign: The Royals Interiors (2022)
Designing interiors for rental buildings is a good challenge. The trick is to balance neutrality with longevity, timelessness with a fresh contemporary look.
This multifamily rental project in North Vancouver included two towers, both renewed in 2021 by @charddevelopment . PAI provided ID for the lobby, units and shared spaces. We aimed to elevate the experience of tenants from the moment they walk in through elegant, expansive foyers and elevator lobbies with wood-slat feature walls and signature light fixtures.
Inside the units, kitchens pair white cabinetry with chrome faucets, stainless-steel appliances and quartz-composite countertops. We selected durable, modern materials throughout and warm-toned vinyl plank flooring that can complement anyone’s furniture.
This project was recognized by @udibc Awards Pacific Region for BC’s best Purpose-Built Market Rental High Rise. 👏

#30YearsofDesign: Vancouver Performing Stars (2024)
In 2024, we carried out a unique TI project that established a performing arts school in Mount Pleasant (right up the street from us!).
The 5,000 ft2 space in a new development was fully utilized with two rehearsal studios, a flexible black box theatre, offices and changerooms for the amazing work of @vanperformstars —creating invaluable community space in the heart of the city.
Arts groups need bespoke spaces in areas of density, rather than getting pushed to the margins! Working with developers, this project proves that is possible, with a clever design that made the most of our firm's theatre expertise. 🎭

In 2018, we had the privilege of working with @arcteryx to establish their North Shore head office. Our team thoughtfully transformed a former warehouse into an interconnected design centre to support the company's innovative working and testing environment.
The design was developed to reflect Arc'teryx' keen attention to detail, high standard of quality, and relationship to honest materials. Flexible collaborative spaces and working pods encourage interaction between team members, and emphasize their deep connection to the outdoors—while ensuring space for their growing team for years to come.

#30YearsofDesign: Elenore on Fifth (2020)
A boutique residential building on Main & 5th with distinct massing evolving from site constraints. ✨
➡️Six floors step gracefully down the hill, celebrating Main's hilltown character and creating ample landscaped roof terraces.
➡️The site presented a major challenge with CoV view cones that cut directly through the site. To respond to this, our team skewed the upper levels off the grid, which also improved the building's sustainability through passive daylighting.
➡️Interior and exterior were designed together to create one seamless, refined dialogue with brick, wood-like panels, and warm earthy tones throughout.
➡️The design targets LEED Gold equivalency, with passive daylighting, solar shading, and high-efficiency systems.

#30YearsofDesign: Christ Church Cathedral (2016)
From 2005–2016, PAI had the privilege of executing four award-winning phases of upgrades to the Christ Church Cathedral, a Class A heritage facility built in 1888.
One highlight of this great project was introducing a unique seismic steel diaphragm that is fully concealed within the heritage stonework—reinforcing the walls and roof while protecting its heritage character. 👏
Along with life safety and accessibility upgrades, we refurbished the interior of the cathedral to better serve the community in both a secular and non-secular context, allowing it to function as a performing arts venue. 🎭
The award-winning stained-glass bell spire was designed as a contemporary expression of the Church’s spirit of outreach and inclusion. 🤗

#30YearsofDesign: SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts (2010)
Bringing together arts and institutional design! 🎭🏫
This unique project for @simonfraseru established a new 120,000 ft2 hub for the School for Contemporary Arts in the heart of Vancouver. Our firm worked with @sfucontemporaryarts fine arts programs to envision four floors of academic spaces based on the needs of students of visual arts, sound, film, dance, and theatre.
The program for the multidisciplinary facility includes 3 fully equipped performance spaces for 80 – 600 patrons, 4 rehearsal studios, a dedicated cinema for movie screenings and film festivals, an art gallery, classrooms, and offices.
Winner of 2010 IDI BC People’s Choice Award and IDI BC Gold Award of Excellence.
Delivered in joint venture with CEI Architecture (now HDR).

#30YearsofDesign: Austeville Head Office (2014) ✨
In 2014, Proscenium transformed an existing 1970s building into a modern and functional corporate headquarters for Austeville Properties, a longtime client.
The interior and exterior of the building were re-envisioned to reflect a contemporary professional image, with sleek materials and clean lines. Offices feature floor-to-ceiling windows, taking advantage of city views and allowing for deep daylight penetration into the core of the building. The original wood structure was exposed and restored, bringing texture and warmth to the space.
This project is a great example of PAI architectural & interiors teams working together to deliver one seamless, cohesive design!

#30YearsofDesign: Ballet BC Granville Island (2023)
It was our privilege to design @balletbc 's new home on Granville Island. Building on previous studies, the company’s dream was finally realized through a major 18,000 ft2 renovation of former Arts Umbrella studios to create spacious, bright multipurpose facility that will serve the company for years to come.
New program spaces include:
- two large studios with a viewing area
- reception desk and offices
- artist dressing room with change cabins, showers and vanity stations
- a fully outfitted gym
- accessible kitchen/green room/VIP lounge for artists, which can also be used for catering and events
➡️Design highlight: We love the inside-outside connection created in the studios and lounge by operable garage doors.
We also completed an exterior refresh including rainscreen cladding, insulation, windows, and doors to meet code requirements.
